Jason Matthews (footballer)
Jason Lee Matthews (born 13 March 1975) is an English former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper and is currently goalkeeper coach at Weymouth. Career Born in Paulton, Somerset, Matthews started playing in goal at an early age and soon won a place at Millfield's Centre of Excellence. Bristol Rovers signed him up on schoolboy terms but he was released just before he left school. Matthews then spent six years playing for a number of clubs in the Screwfix League including Welton Rovers, Paulton Rovers and Mangotsfield United, before signing for Geoff Butler's Salisbury City. The following season Matthews signed for Nuneaton Borough, though it was only a couple of months before he was invited to join Exeter City, where he spent the 1999–2000 season, giving him his only taste of Football League action. Jason Matthews (born 20 July 1970 in Hackney) is a former boxer from England in the Middleweight (160 lb) division. Boxing career Amateur career Matthews won the 1995 Amateur Boxing Association British middleweight title, when boxing out of the Crown and Manor ABC. Professional career Also known as "Method Man", Matthews turned pro in 1995 and won the vacant World Boxing Organization inter-continental middleweight title with a victory against Paul Wright in 1997; then won the commonwealth Middleweight Title against Paul Jones in 1998. He then won the middleweight interim title on 17 June 1999 with a victory against Ryan Rhodes. He was elevated to full champion when long-term injuries prevented the previous title holder, Bert Schenk, from defending the title. Jason Matthews (1951 – April 28, 2021) was an American author of espionage novels and former CIA officer, best known for the ''Red Sparrow'' spy novel trilogy. Personal life Jason was married to Suzanne, also a former officer. He died April 28, 2021 at the age of 69 from corticobasal degeneration. Career Prior to becoming a novelist, Matthews spent 33 years working for the CIA. While in the CIA he was officially a diplomat, in Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean, but his real job was recruiting and then managing foreign agents. In 2014, his first novel, ''Red Sparrow'' (2013), won an Edgar Award for Best First Novel by an American Author. Writer and critic Art Taylor praised it in ''The Washington Post'', writing that it "isn't just a fast-paced thriller—it's a first-rate novel as noteworthy for its superior style as for its gripping depiction of a secretive world."
