Jason-class Corvette
The ''Jason''-class corvette was a type of wooden screw corvette made between 1859 and 1863. There were a total of seven ships of this class made by the authorization of the Royal Navy. History The first three ships were ordered in 1856 as units of the preceding although was quickly converted to a fourth rate later, but was first the ''Jason''-class corvette. The authorization to make these ships came from the surveyor at that time, who was in charge of making the . Two ships from the ''North Star'' class were then converted into their own class, the ''Jason'' class. They had covered decks and it was approved on 23 January 1860. Six more vessels were then brought into the ''Jason'' class and ordered by the Royal Navy to be made in 1860. An additional pair was also added in 1861. However, all of these but were made the rest were ''Jason'' class and only ''Menai'' survived to become a ''North Star''-class vessel. Juno-class Corvette
''Juno''-class corvettes were a group of two ships built for the Royal Navy during the 1860s in London to a design by Sir Edward Reed.''The Sail and Steam Navy List 1815-1889'' (David Lyon & Rif Winfield, (Chatham Publishing, 2004), p. 287 Characteristics and construction They were designed to carry troops with the accommodation arranged with the soldiers on the lower deck, and the sailors on the upper deck. It displacement was 2,083 tons, its crew 200, top speed it achieved was 10.53 knots. Armaments for the ship were usually two 7-inch MLR and four 64-pounder cannons, later being rearmed with eight 64-pounders. A corvette is a small warship. It is traditionally the smallest class of vessel considered to be a proper (or " rated") warship. The warship class above the corvette is that of the frigate, while the class below was historically that of the sloop-of-war. The modern roles that a corvette fulfills include coastal patrol craft, missile boat and fast attack craft. These corvettes are typically between 500 tons and 2,000 .although recent designs may approach 3,000 tons, having size and capabilities that overlap with smaller frigates. Fourth Rate
In 1603 all English warships with a compliment of fewer than 160 men were known as 'small ships'. In 1625/26 to establish pay rates for officers a six tier naval ship rating system was introduced.Winfield 2009 These small ships were divided into three tiers, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth rates. Up to the end of the 17th century the number of guns and the compliment size was adjusted until the rating system was actually clarified. A 'Fourth Rate' was nominally a ship of over thirty guns with a complement of 140 men. In the rating system of the Royal Navy used to categorize sailing warships in the 18th century, a fourth-rate was a ship of the line with 46 to 60 guns mounted.
