''Jane'' is an early 1980s British animated and live-action military comedy television series. It was produced for two series, in 1982 and 1984. Set during World War II, it was based on a comic strip created by Norman Pett and first published in the ''Daily Mail'' in 1932. The series was produced in 10-minute episodes. The cast included Glynis Barber (as Jane), Bob Danvers-Walker, Max Wall, Dean Allen, Robin Bailey, Suzanne Danielle, John Bird, Frank Thornton and Clive Mantle. ''Jane'' is a comic strip created and drawn by Norman Pett exclusively for the British tabloid newspaper ''The Daily Mirror'' from 5 December 1932 to 10 October 1959. Creation Jane was born when artist Norman Pett made a wager that he could create a comic strip as popular to adults as the strip ''Pip, Squeak and Wilfred'' was to children. Originally Pett's wife Mary modelled for him, but in the late 1930s, she abandoned modelling in pursuit of golf. Pett then teamed up with Chrystabel Leighton-Porter whom he met while she was modelling for a class in Birmingham in 1939. Characters and story Originally entitled ''Jane's Journal, Or the Diary of a Bright Young Thing'', the salacious comic strip featured the misadventures of the title ingenue. Clive Mantle
Clive Andrew Mantle (born 3 June 1957) is an English actor. He played general surgeon Mike Barratt in the BBC hospital drama series ''Casualty'' and '' Holby City'' in the 1990s, and Little John in the 1980s fantasy series ''Robin of Sherwood''. He returned to ''Casualty'' in 2016 as Mike Barratt for the show's 30th anniversary. Mantle was educated at Kimbolton School, Cambridgeshire between 1970 and 1975 and at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) between 1978 and 1980. He appeared in 11 productions of the National Youth Theatre in five seasons between 1974 and 1978, and began carving a successful career as a stage actor in the 1980s, alongside various television roles. In 1984 he was nominated for an Olivier Award and was joint Best Newcomer in the Plays and Players Awards for his performance as Lennie in ''Of Mice and Men''. The British Academy Film Awards, more commonly known as the BAFTA Film Awards is an annual award show hosted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) to honour the best British and international contributions to film. Frank Thornton Ball (15 January 192116 March 2013), professionally known as Frank Thornton, was an English actor. He was known for playing Captain Peacock in ''Are You Being Served?'' and its sequel ''Grace & Favour'' (''Are You Being Served? Norman Pett (12 April 1891, Kings Norton, Worcestershire – 16 February 1960, Sussex) was an English artist who, in 1932, created the famous cartoon character ''Jane'' for the ''Daily Mirror''. Early life Pett was born on 12 April 1891 in Kings Norton, Worcestershire. After being invalided out of the First World War, he studied art at the Press Art School. Later, he taught art at the Mosley Road Junior Art School and at Birmingham Central School of Art. ''Jane'' In 1932, he set out to create a comic strip that would be as popular to adults as the famous ''Pip, Squeak and Wilfred'' was to children. And so, ''Jane'' was created. John Bird (actor)
John Bird (born 22 November 1936) is an English satirist, actor and comedian, known for his work in television satire, including many appearances with John Fortune. Early life John Bird was born in Bulwell, Nottingham, and attended High Pavement Grammar School, Nottingham. While studying at King's College, Cambridge, he met John Fortune. Bird became well known during the television satire boom of the 1960s, appearing in ''That Was The Week That Was'', the title of which was coined by Bird. Bird was intended by Ned Sherrin for David Frost's role in the series, but was committed elsewhere.
