Jane's Fighting Ships
''Janes Fighting Ships'' is an annual reference book of each country's warship, navy and coast guard, along with their weapons and aircraft. Included are ship names, construction data, size, speed, range, complement, engineering, armament, and sensors. This is generally followed by relevant commentary. Originally, it was illustrated with ink sketches done by founder, Fred T. Jane (1865–1916). It is his surname "Jane" that makes this title distinctive. Jane was a struggling commercial artist and journalist with an interest in naval affairs. In the 1880s he set out to record all of the armored warships serving in the world's navies. His plan was to publish this record with the title ''Ironclads of the World''. Initially ''Brassey's Naval Annual'' and various Royal Navy periodicals were the source of inspiration for his drawings. Brassey's Naval Annual
''The Naval Annual'' was a Periodical literature, periodical that provided considerable text and graphic information (largely concerning the British Royal Navy) which had previously been obtainable only by consulting a wide range of often foreign language publications. During its life it underwent a number of title changes. The ''Annual'' was started by Thomas Brassey, 1st Earl Brassey, in 1886. Though often compared with ''Jane's Fighting Ships'', the two British annuals were, in fact quite different. The Brassey series began a dozen years earlier, and its special strength was the dozen or more detailed articles on naval (plus, from 1920 through 1935, merchant marine) matters, authored by experts. Janes is a global open-source intelligence company specialising in military, national security, aerospace and transport topics, whose name derives from British author Fred T. Jane. History Jane's Information Group was founded in 1898 by Fred T. Jane, who had begun sketching ships as an enthusiast naval artist while living in Portsmouth. This gradually developed into an encyclopedic knowledge, culminating in the publishing of ''All the World's Fighting Ships'' (1898). The company then gradually branched out into other areas of military expertise.
