James Verne Dusenberry
James Verne Dusenberry (April 7, 1906 – December 16, 1966) was a well educated and publicly acclaimed scholar. He is best known for his writings on and the relationships he built with many of the various Montana tribes throughout his lifetime. Early life Verne Dusenberry was born in Corning, Iowa on April 7, 1906. When Dusenberry was very young his family moved to Montana. His interest in Native Americans grew and he soon became well acquainted with the surrounding tribes of Montana from an early age. In 1937 he was adopted by a Pend d'Oreille chief and was given the name "Many Grizzly Bears". After working his way through college and dealing with tuberculosis, he landed a job located on the Flathead Indian Reservation. Dusenberry was married at one time and had a daughter named Lynn Dusenberry, who was very involved with her father's research. Pend D'Oreilles (tribe)
The Pend d'Oreille ( ), also known as the Kalispel (), are Indigenous peoples of the Northwest Plateau. Today many of them live in Montana and eastern Washington (state), Washington of the United States. The Kalispel peoples referred to their primary tribal range as ''Kaniksu''. Their traditional territory comprised the drainage systems of the Flathead River, Clark Fork, and Pend Oreille rivers. It extended from roughly present-day Plains, Montana, westward along the Clark Fork River, to Lake Pend Oreille and Priest Lake in Idaho, and the Pend Oreille River (''Ntxwe'', meaning "river") in eastern Washington and into British Columbia (Canada). Flathead Indian Reservation
The Flathead Indian Reservation, located in western Montana on the Flathead River, is home to the Bitterroot Salish, Kootenai, and Pend d'Oreilles tribes – also known as the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Nation. The reservation was created through the July 16, 1855, Treaty of Hellgate. It has land in four of Montana's counties: Lake, Sanders, Missoula, and Flathead, and controls most of Flathead Lake.
