James Townsend (New Zealand Settler)
James Townsend (c.1790 – 12 August 1866) was an English wine merchant, who in later life was a pioneer settler in New Zealand's South Island. He was also an amateur cricketer. Life Townsend was born in 1788. or 1790/1.1841 census details online He played first-class cricket from 1821 to 1831. As a cricketer, he was mainly associated with Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), of which he was a member. He made nine known appearances in first-class matches including four for the Gentlemen. He was in business as a wine merchant, and was known for his interest in music. In the 1841 census, Townsend and much of his family were recorded as resident in the civil parish of St Pancras, London. A purchaser of land in the Canterbury settlement, Townsend was listed with the address 21 Evershall Street, Mornington Crescent. James Townsend (baptised 8 February 1737 – 1 July 1787) was an English Whig politician and Lord Mayor of London in 1772–73. He is believed to be England's first black member of parliament and the first black Lord Mayor of London. Life and political career James Townsend was baptised on 8 February 1737 at the church of St. Christopher-le-Stocks in London. He was the son of London merchant (and later MP) Chauncy Townsend and his wife Bridget Phipps. He attended Hertford College, Oxford in 1756. In politics James Townsend was closely linked from the 1760s with the Whig grandee William Petty, 2nd Earl of Shelburne. Supported by Shelburne, he entered Parliament as Member for West Looe at a by-election in 1767, holding the seat until 1774. James Townsend (New York Politician)
James Townsend (December 17, 1729 – May 24, 1790 in Jericho, then in Queens, now in Nassau County, New York) was an American politician from New York. Life Townsend was the son of Jacob Townsend (1692–1742) and Phebe (Seaman) Townsend (1699–1774). On April 2, 1757, he married Mary Hicks (1730–1796); they had seven children. Townsend was a deputy to the 3rd and 4th New York Provincial Congresses in 1776. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1784, 1784-85, 1786, and 1787. He was elected as a Federalist to the 2nd United States Congress in April 1790, but died a month later, before his term began. James Townsend (November 25, 1927 – July 18, 2019) was an American politician. He served as a Democratic member for the 27th district of the Oklahoma House of Representatives. Life and career Townsend was born in Haileyville, Oklahoma, the son of Rose Baker and John D. Townsend. He attended Oklahoma Military Academy. He served under General Douglas MacArthur while serving in the military. Townsend was an engineer and firefighter. James Tarlton Townsend is a Distinguished Rudy Professor of Psychology at Indiana University, Bloomington. He is known for his work in mathematical psychology, particularly in distinguishing parallel and serial processing and for models of perception. Education and career Townsend received an A.B. in Psychology from Fresno State College in 1961. In 1962, he began his graduate work under Richard Atkinson at the Institute for Mathematical Studies in the Social Sciences at Stanford University. James Townsend (20 June 1937 – 6 January 2021) was an Irish Labour Party politician and senator. Townsend stood for the Labour Party in Carlow–Kilkenny at the 1981 Irish general election, taking 2% of the first preference votes, and was not elected. In 1991, he was elected to Carlow County Council, representing the Bagenalstown area. James Townshend Saward (1798 – c. 1875) was a Victorian English barrister and forger also known by the nickname of Jem the Penman. In addition to his legal career he forged money orders for almost 30 years. Early life James Townshend Saward was born in 1798 at Rotherhithe in Surrey, the son of James and Elizabeth Ann Saward. He was called to the Bar in 1840, became a barrister and had his chambers in the Inner Temple. With his wife Maria he had a son, Francis (born 1831), and a daughter, Henrietta (born 1837). James Matthew Townsend (August 18, 1841 – June 17, 1913) was an African Methodist Episcopal (AME) minister and a state legislator from Indiana. A Republican, he served in the legislature in the 1884 session. From 1889 to 1891 he was recorder at the General Land Office in Washington, D.C., appointed by President Benjamin Harrison.
