James Shepherd (musician)
James Shepherd (25 November 1936 – 22 June 2023) was an English cornet player from Northumbria, described as one of the world's most respected players of the instrument, having won the Championship Soloist of Great Britain Prize in three consecutive years (1962-4). He was principal cornet of Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band from 1960 to 1963, then the Black Dyke Band from 1963 to 1973, before forming a brass ensemble, James Shepherd Versatile Brass, which he led until 1989. He was also principal cornet of the Virtuosi Brass Band, a recording ensemble assembled by Eric Ball. Biography Early life He was born on 25 November 1936 in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland, the son of James, a coal miner and cornet player, and Elizabeth, née Wood. Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band
{{unreferenced, date=October 2013 The Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band is a brass band based in West Yorkshire, England, and close to South Yorkshire. History The South Elmsall Village Brass Band can be traced back to 1884. In 1905, the band was adopted by the local Frickley Colliery, which in turn was to become owned by the Carlton Main Coal Company, and by 1923 the band became known by its present name. By the mid 1990s times looked very bleak for the band, as it did for a great many other bands and working personnel in the mining industry, with the eventual closure of the pits in the UK and Frickley Colliery in particular. Band membership dropped to six members but the band was rebuilt. By 1999, the band became Yorkshire Champions and represented Yorkshire at the Brass Band National Finals at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The Worshipful Company of Musicians is one of the Livery Companies of the City of London. Its history dates back to at least 1350. Originally a specialist guild for musicians, its role became an anachronism in the 18th century, when the centre of music making in London moved from the City to the West End, and for more than a century it was a general guild for figures in the City, with no specific musical role. Black Dyke Band
Black Dyke Band, formerly John Foster & Son Black Dyke Mills Band, is one of the oldest and best-known brass bands in the world. It originated as multiple community bands founded by John Foster at his family's textile mill in Queensbury, West Yorkshire in the mid-19th century. The ensemble has become prominent in competitive band championships and through recordings for film and television. The band is well-known for recording the soundtrack to the BBC gardening makeover series '' Ground Force'' in 1997, and appeared in the Christmas edition of Victoria Wood's sitcom '' Dinnerladies'' in 1999. In 1999 they played on the Academy Award-nominated song "That'll Do" from '' Babe: Pig in the City''. Hallelujah! (TV Series)
''Hallelujah!'' is a British television sitcom produced by Yorkshire Television that aired on ITV from 29 April 1983 to 21 December 1984. The series was set in a Salvation Army citadel in the fictional Yorkshire town of Brigthorpe during series 1 (and later in the fictional place of Blackwick in series 2). Captain Emily Ridley (Thora Hird) has been posted there, having been an active member of the Salvation Army for 42 years. Despite the town and residents being seemingly pleasant, Emily is determined to flush out sin from behind the net curtains. Assisting Emily is her niece Alice Meredith (Patsy Rowlands). National Brass Band Championships Of Great Britain
There are five main brass band sections in the United Kingdom: Championship, First, Second, Third, and Fourth. Sometimes, a Youth section is also used, but this is not graded. Championship section This is the section containing the very best bands in the United Kingdom who compete in the Open and National Brass Band Championships, established in 1853 and 1860 respectively. Bands such aCory Band Black Dyke, Brighouse and Rastrick, Fairey and Grimethorpe are placed in here. A few of these have professional or semi-professional players, but the contest has always been designed towards amateur musicians. The test pieces set for or commissioned by this section are extremely difficult and use complicated musical conventions and techniques to challenge the musicians.
