James Stuart Mackie
James Stuart Mackie (March 12, 1860 – January 21, 1949) was a Canadian businessman and politician. He was the 12th mayor of Calgary, Alberta. Mackie was born in Westminster, England in 1860 to Scottish parents. Hearing of opportunities in Canada, he emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1882. In Winnipeg, he learnt to become a gunsmith with Hingston Smith Arms Company. In 1885, he went back to England to convince his parents to return with him to Canada. They instead decided to go to Syracuse, New York then later San Francisco, California. While en route back to Canada, Mackie met Grace MacMillan Forgan. Forgan was heading to Omaha, Nebraska to be with her parents. They continued to write each other, and in February, 1892 they were married. Mackie headed to Calgary in 1886 to open a gun store. Jamie Mackie
James Charles Mackie (born 22 September 1985) is a British former professional footballer who played as a striker or winger, most notably for Queens Park Rangers, Plymouth Argyle, and Oxford United. Born in England, Mackie played for Scotland. Mackie began his career at Wimbledon, progressing through the club's youth system and making his first-team debut in December 2003. A squad member when the club was renamed and moved to Milton Keynes, he made few appearances before joining Conference side Exeter City. He spent time on loan with Sutton United in 2005 and returned to establish himself as a first-team regular. His performances during the 2007–08 season attracted interest from other clubs and he signed for Plymouth Argyle in the January transfer window, scoring twice on his debut in the Championship. James Austin Copland Mackie (1924–2011), known as Jamie Mackie, was an Australian academic, described by The Australian as one of the country's "pioneers of its post-war engagement with Asia" and by The Age as having had a "distinguished academic career to the study of post-colonial south-east Asia." Born in Kandy to the Australian manager of a tea plantation, he studied in Melbourne and Oxford before working "with the Colombo Plan in Jakarta from 1956 to 1958, working with the newly established National Planning Bureau." He taught at the University of Melbourne (1958–1967) and Monash University (1968–1978) and edited the ASAA Review. James (Jem) Mackie (18 May 1821 – 28 December 1867) was a British Liberal Party and Whig politician and rugby footballer, sometimes credited with creating the sport. Rugby football Mackie is sometimes credited as the creator of rugby football when, while he was at Rugby School in 1838–39, he picked up the ball and ran with it, becoming known as "the first great runner-in". This was against convention that, when a ball was caught, the player should retreat and kick towards the goal. However, the sport is most often credited to William Webb Ellis, who was at the school from 1816 to 1825. The credit may have been given to Webb Ellis as Mackie was expelled from the school before the practice was legalised by the school in 1841, before an agreed set of rules was dictated, and his expulsion made him an "undesirable role model". James Mackie (1685–1765) was a Church of Scotland minister and historian who served as Moderator of the General Assembly in 1751. Life He was licensed by the Presbytery of Dalkeith in 1719 and ordained as minister of Forteviot in March 1720.''Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae''; by Hew Scott In 1734 he translated from Forteviot to St Ninian's Parish, south of Stirling, under the patronage of King George II. He remained there for the remainder of his life. During his period of occupancy, in 1746 St Ninian's Church was blown up as part of the Jacobite Uprising of 1745. The Jacobite forces at gathered on the morning of 1 February 1746 at the church, but Bonnie Prince Charlie was late to arrive.
