James Lawrence
James Lawrence (October 1, 1781 – June 4, 1813) was an officer of the United States Navy. During the War of 1812, he commanded in a single-ship action against , commanded by Philip Broke. He is probably best known today for his last words, "Don't give up the ship!", uttered during the capture of the ''Chesapeake''. The quotation is still a popular naval battle cry, and was invoked in Oliver Hazard Perry's personal battle flag, adopted to commemorate his dead friend. Biography Lawrence was born on October 1, 1781, the son of John and Martha (Tallman) Lawrence, in Burlington, New Jersey, but raised in Woodbury. His mother died when he was an infant, and his Loyalist father fled to Canada during the American Revolution, leaving his half-sister to care for the young Lawrence. He attended Woodbury Academy. James Duncan Lawrence (author)
James Duncan Lawrence ( – ), best known as Jim Lawrence, was an American author best known for authoring most of the Tom Swift Jr. series of books (under the pseudonym Victor Appleton II) and Friday Foster comic strip. Biography Lawrence was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1918. As a freelance writer in the late 1940s and early 1950s, he wrote scripts for a number of radio shows, including The Green Hornet and Sergeant Preston of the Yukon. In the 1950s and 1960s, he worked for the Stratemeyer Syndicate on a number of series (listed in the Bibliography). In the 1970s, he worked for the Chicago Tribune and the New York News Syndicate with illustrator Jordi Longarón on Friday Foster comic strip. Later in his career, Lawrence co-wrote two Infocom interactive fiction games with Stu Galley: Seastalker (1984) and Moonmist (1986). Lawrence died in Summit, New Jersey in 1994. James Hubert Lawrence (born 8 March 1970) is a football coach and former professional player who played as a right winger. He is a fitness coach for the Zambia national team. He notably had spells in the Premier League with Leicester City and Bradford City, as well as playing in the Football League with Sunderland, Doncaster Rovers, Walsall, Wigan Athletic, Grimsby Town and Brentford. He also played non-league football for Cowes Sports, Fisher Athletic, Worthing, Harrow Borough, Margate, Banstead Athletic, Cobham and Lingfield. Born in England, he represented Jamaica at international level and was capped 24 times, scoring one goal. As a coach Lawrence managed Ashford Town between 2009 and 2011 where he served as player/manager. In 2018 he was appointed assistant manager at Kingstonian. James Henry Lawrence
James Henry Lawrence (1773–1840) was a British writer. He is known for his utopian novel ''The Empire of the Nairs, or the Rights of Women'', which appeared in English in 1811. It was influenced by the political writing of Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin. Life He was the son of Richard James Lawrence, a slave-owner of Fairfield, Jamaica, He was educated at Eton College, where he was Montem poet in 1790. He then studied in Germany, at the University of Göttingen. Lawrence led an itinerant life, mainly in continental Europe. In 1803, in France with his father, he was arrested, along with other English residents and tourists, and was detained for several years at Verdun. He escaped by passing himself off as an Austrian. He received compensation for the Fairfield estate, under the Slave Compensation Act 1837. Sir James Clarke Lawrence, 1st Baronet (1820 - 21 May 1897) was Lord Mayor of London and a Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1868 to 1885. Lawrence was the son of William Lawrence, an alderman of the City of London, and his wife Jane Clarke, daughter of James Clarke. Lawrence was an alderman and Deputy Lieutenant for the City of London and a J.P. for Middlesex, Surrey and the city of Westminster. From 1862 to 1863 he was Sheriff of London and Middlesex. He was also president of the Bridewell and Bethlehem Hospitals. Lawrence was elected Member of Parliament for Lambeth at a by-election in 1865, but lost the seat again at the following 1865 general election. In 1868 he became Lord Mayor of London, shortly before he was re-elected for Lambeth at the 1868 general election. James Richard Geoffrey Lawrence (born 29 November 1976 in Portsmouth) is a former English cricketer. He was a right-handed tail-end batsman and a left-arm medium-fast bowler who played first-class cricket for Durham in 1995 and British Universities in 1998. James Lawrence represented Durham in one match during the 1995 County Championship. From 1997 to 1999 he played in three consecutive finals in the Halifax British Universities Sports Association Championship, two of which were won by his Durham University team.
