James Kelly (footballer, Born 1865)
James Kelly (15 October 1865 – 20 February 1932) was a Scottish footballer who played for Renton, Celtic and Scotland. At Renton, his hometown club, Kelly had won the Scottish Cup twice ( 1885 and 1888), as well as a beaten finalist in 1886 and a 'World Champion' after they defeated West Bromwich Albion in an 1888 challenge match. Converted from an inside forward to a centre-half of attacking bent in what was an important evolution in tactics developed at Renton, he was the first Celtic captain, playing in their first-ever match, a 5–2 win against Rangers in May 1888 (less than two weeks after playing in Renton's World Championship game). He added to his medal collection with another Scottish Cup in 1892 alongside former Renton teammate Neil McCallum, becoming the first players to win the competition with two different clubs. Renton, West Dunbartonshire
Renton (; ) is a village in West Dunbartonshire, in the west Central Lowlands of Scotland. In the 2001 National Census it had a population of 2,138. Renton is particularly famous for the village's association football side. Renton was one of the 11 founder members of the Scottish Football League and winners of the 1885 and 1888 Scottish Cup, producing many famous players. Willie Hughes (footballer)
William Hughes (7 July 1909 – 1 January 1996) was a Scottish footballer who played mainly as an outside left, although he was a versatile player who could operate in several positions. His longest spell was with Celtic where he made over 100 appearances in all competitions and spent seven seasons but was a regular starter only in one ( 1933–34), otherwise being seen as a squad member who could fill in for several roles. He was not selected for the club's two Scottish Cup finals during the period in 1931 and 1933 despite playing in earlier rounds, and only made four appearances when they won the Scottish Football League in 1935–36, so it is unlikely that he received a winner's medal from a major competition. He began his league career with Bathgate, departing when the club went defunct, and after leaving Celtic played for Clyde and Arbroath, in a more defensive role than in his early career. Francis David Kelly (8 December 1892 – 5 May 1919) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as an outside right in the Scottish League for Motherwell and Celtic. Personal life Kelly was the son of former Celtic player and chairman James Kelly, while his younger brother Robert also served the club as chairman. He served as a private in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) during the First World War. Michael Kelly (Lord Provost)
Michael Kelly (born 1 November 1940) is a Scottish Labour politician and businessman. He graduated from the University of Strathclyde and became a lecturer in economics there and a Labour councillor. From 1984 he was managing director of Michael Kelly Associates, a PR company. He held the position of Lord Provost of Glasgow from 1980 to 1984, and was Rector of the University of Glasgow from 1984 to 1987. As Lord Provost, he was instrumental in the city's adoption of the '' Glasgow's miles better'' campaign and slogan, which is credited with an important role in Glasgow's cultural renaissance during the 1980s. A member of one of the families that had controlled Celtic F.C. since its foundation, he sat on the club's board of directors until 1994, when the club reached the verge of bankruptcy and the much-criticised old regime was ousted by Fergus McCann's takeover. Robert Kelly (football Chairman)
Sir Robert McErlean Kelly (17 October 1902 – 21 September 1971) was appointed a member of the board of Scottish football club Celtic after the death of his father James Kelly in 1931. He later became chairman in 1947, a position he held until 1971. Early life Robert Kelly was born on 17 October 1902 in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, the fourth son in a family of six sons and four daughters. His father James Kelly played for Celtic, and was the club's first ever captain. James Kelly subsequently became a director at the club and had a brief spell as chairman. Robert Kelly's mother, Margaret, was also herself the daughter of a Celtic founder. Kelly and his brothers were educated at St Joseph's College, Dumfries, a fee-paying school opened to develop a professional Catholic middle class in Scotland.
