James Humphrey (New York Politician)
James Humphrey (October 9, 1811June 16, 1866) was a U.S. Representative from New York. Born in Fairfield, Connecticut, Humphrey pursued classical studies under his father Heman Humphrey. He was graduated from Amherst College in 1831. He studied law. He was admitted to the bar and practiced. He moved to Louisville, Kentucky, in 1837 and one year later to Brooklyn, New York. Humphrey was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1859 – March 3, 1861). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1860 to the Thirty-seventh Congress and for election in 1862 to the Thirty-eighth Congress. Humphrey was elected to the Thirty-ninth Congress and served from March 4, 1865, until his death in Brooklyn, New York, June 16, 1866. He served as chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Navy (Thirty-ninth Congress). He was interred in Greenwood Cemetery. James Brown Humphrey
James Brown Humphrey, also known as "Professor Jim" Humphrey (1859 -1937) was a musician, bandleader, and music instructor in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States and central figure in the formation of jazz as a contemporary musical art form. Humphrey predates the jazz genre as an active performer and is not himself considered a jazz musician. However, his involvement in the formal training of large numbers of musicians along the southern plantation belt of the Mississippi River delta during the immediate years following the reconstruction era resulted in many virtuoso performers who would go on to originate jazz as a distinct musical genre. Consequently, he is regarded by some in the jazz aficionado community to be "the grandfather of jazz". United Sabbath-Day Adventist Church
The United Sabbath-Day Adventist Church is a small African American Christian denomination founded by James K. Humphrey. History It formed in New York City as a breakaway from the Seventh-day Adventist Church in 1929–1930 over racial tensions between black and white people. Its beliefs remained similar to Seventh-day Adventists. At its peak in the 1930s the movement had 15 congregations and smaller "missions" throughout the United States and Jamaica. It began to decline in the same decade. As of 2007, a small number of people remain in a single congregation in New York City. James Humphrey (convict)
James White Humphrey (1832–1898) was a convict transported to Western Australia, and later became one of the colony's ex-convict school teachers. Born in the United Kingdom in 1832, Humphrey worked as a clerk until convicted of forgery and sentenced to transportation. Erickson states that he was transported for life, but other records state fifteen years. Humphrey arrived in Western Australia on board the ''Stag'' in 1855, and received his ticket of leave two years later. For some time he was self-employed in Perth before working for William Locke Brockman until 1860, when he received a conditional pardon. In 1863 Humphrey was appointed to a teaching post at Quindalup, and the following year he married Mary (Bertha) Tapping at Fremantle. When his request for a salary increase was refused in 1868, he resigned as a teacher and spent the next five years working as a postmaster, bootmaker and agent at Quindalup.
