James Fulton (New Zealand Politician)
James Fulton (27 June 1830 – 20 November 1891) was a 19th-century Member of Parliament in Otago, New Zealand and a cricketer. Biography James Fulton was born in Bengal, and went to New Zealand in the late 1840s. On 22 September 1852, he married Catherine Valpy, a daughter of one of Dunedin's most prominent and prosperous families. His wife was to become a notable suffragette. They had three sons and three daughters. His two eldest sons, Arthur Fulton (1853-1889) and James Edward Fulton (1854-1928) were prominent civil engineers. He played five first-class cricket matches for Otago between 1863 and 1868. These were the first five first-class matches played in New Zealand, and scores were very low. He made the top score of the match in the first two matches: 25 not out in the first match, which Otago won, and 22 in the second, which Canterbury won. He captained Otago in three of his matches. Otago (, ; mi, Ōtākou ) is a region of New Zealand located in the southern half of the South Island administered by the Otago Regional Council. It has an area of approximately , making it the country's second largest local government region. Its population was The name "Otago" is the local southern Māori dialect pronunciation of "Ōtākou", the name of the Māori village near the entrance to Otago Harbour. Sir Harry Albert Atkinson (1 November 1831 – 28 June 1892) served as the List of Prime Ministers of New Zealand, tenth Prime Minister of New Zealand, premier of New Zealand on four separate occasions in the late 19th century, and was Minister of Finance (New Zealand), Colonial Treasurer for a total of ten years. He was responsible for guiding the country during a time of economic recession, depression, and was known as a cautious and prudent manager of government finances, though distrusted for some policies such as his 1882 National Insurance (welfare) scheme and leasehold land schemes. Walter Carncross
Sir Walter Charles Frederick Carncross (23 April 1855 – 30 June 1940) was a New Zealand politician of the Liberal Party. Biography Early life Carncross was born in Bendigo, Victoria, in 1855 (or 1853). He came to Dunedin with his parents when he was seven years old. Carncross married Mary, a daughter of R. Johnston in 1883. He was to become a newspaper proprietor by trade, owning both the ''Taieri Advocate'' & ''Eltham Argus''. Political career He represented the electorate from to 1902, when he retired. He was in favour of perpetual leasing of land and opposed the sale of the railways. He was opposed to women's suffrage and in 1891 deliberately moved an amendment that was intended to make the bill fail in the Legislative Council.
