James Fletcher (Australian Politician)
James Fletcher (August 1834 – 19 March 1891) was an Australian coalminer and owner, newspaper proprietor and politician, a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Fletcher was born in Dalkeith, East Lothian, Scotland to parents of William Fletcher and Anne Fletcher. Migrated to Australia in February 1851, first working in the goldfields and later in the Newcastle area as a coalminer. He married Isabella Birrell in 1854. He was responsible in setting up Australia's Agricultural Co's sick and accident fund. In 1860 he was elected chairman of the new ''Hunter River Miners' Association'', which soon became involved in New South Wales's first serious industrial action, when the mine owners tried unsuccessfully to reduce payments to miners by twenty percent. The union then attempted to establish a mining cooperative, ''New South Wales Co-operative Coal Co'', under Fletcher's leadership, but it failed. Alexander Brown (Australian Politician)
Alexander Brown (9 February 1851 – 28 March 1926) was an Australian politician. Brown was born in Maitland, New South Wales and educated at Fraser's private school, West Maitland. He married Mary Ellen Ribbands in August 1872 and they had three daughters and six sons. He was trained as a solicitor, but did not practice. He became a mine-owner pastoralist and businessman. Brown was the member for Newcastle in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from February 1889 to June 1891, elected as a Protectionist. James Ellis (Australian Politician)
James Cole Ellis (16 September 1843 – 7 July 1930) was an Australian politician. Ellis was born in Jersey and migrated to Victoria in 1854 and moved to New South Wales in 1857. He became a major ship-owner in Newcastle and acquired waterfront property in Pyrmont in Sydney. He married Maria Kramer in 1863 and they had one daughter and six sons. In 1882, Ellis was elected as a member for Newcastle in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and held the seat until 1889. He was appointed to the New South Wales Legislative Council in 1891, but resigned in 1894 to successfully contest Newcastle West, which he held until 1895. Ellis married Anne Johnson in 1922. George Lloyd (politician)
George Alfred Lloyd (14 November 1815 – 25 December 1897) was an Australian politician, elected as a member for Newcastle from 1869 to 1877, 1880 to 1882 and 1885 to 1887. Early life Lloyd was born in Norwood, Surrey, England and educated at Aske's Hospital School, London. His father's business failed in and he was sent to work for a family friend in Sydney in 1833. He opened a store and was postmaster at Hinton, near Raymond Terrace on the Hunter River. After his employer's bankruptcy, he became a farmer on the Williams River and then an auctioneer in Sydney. He married Mary Threlkeld in July 1841 and they had eleven children. With the discovery of gold, he moved into the gold related businesses of quartz crushing and gold escorting and then invested in shipping. He returned to London in 1855 and his company, ''Lloyd, Beilby & Co.'', acted as commercial agents to the Government of New South Wales until 1859, when he went bankrupt due to losses on his shipping business. Newcastle is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales named after and including Newcastle. It is represented since the 2014 Newcastle by-election by Tim Crakanthorp of the Australian Labor Party. The district takes in the eastern part of the City of Newcastle, including the parts of the suburbs from Hexham to Mayfield lying to the east of the Main North railway line, Broadmeadow, Hamilton South, Merewether Heights and Merewether and the suburbs further east, including central Newcastle and Hamilton. Richard Bowker (Australian Businessman)
Richard Ryther Steer Bowker (30 August 1815 – 3 April 1903) was an Australian mariner, physician, surgeon and politician. Early life and education Bowker was the son of Thomas Dawson and Elizabeth Steer and born at Campsall, Yorkshire, England. He was awarded diplomas in botany and materia medica in Paris in 1836 and an MD from the University of St Andrews in 1839. He visited Australia in the emigrant ship the ''Shepherd'' and then migrated to Melbourne, Victoria, in the in February 1841. Arthur Bruce Smith (28 June 1851 – 14 August 1937), commonly referred to as A. Bruce Smith, was a long serving Australian politician and leading political opponent of the White Australia policy. He has been described as the most prominent Australian advocate for classical liberalism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Early life Born in Rotherhithe, Surrey, England, Smith was the fifth of seven sons of wealthy ship owner William Howard Smith and his second wife Agnes. John Sutherland (New South Wales Politician)
John Sutherland (16 February 1816 – 23 June 1889) was a builder and politician in colonial New South Wales. Early life Sutherland was born near Wick, Caithness in Scotland, the son of a crofter, John Sutherland, and his wife Louisa. Sutherland had little formal education and trained as carpenter. He emigrated to New South Wales as an unassisted migrant, arriving in 1838 and set himself up as a successful builder. Sutherland married Mary Ogilvie, daughter of Captain Ogilvie of Campbelltown, on 2 May 1839. They had two sons, who died young, and a daughter. In 1863 with John Frazer and William Manson he took up 287 square miles near Port Denison, Queensland. He later held another 250 square miles in the South Kennedy district as well as Lindisfarne in the North Gregory district. Sir Charles Kinnaird Mackellar (5 December 184414 July 1926) was an Australian politician and surgeon. He served in the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1885 to 1925, with the exception of a period of 50 days in 1903 when he filled a Casual vacancies in the Australian Parliament, casual vacancy in the Australian Senate, Senate. Robert Vaughn (Australian Politician)
Robert Matterson Vaughn (1833 – 14 April 1908) was an Australian politician, member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Vaughn was born in Ohio, United States of America, son of Jesse Vaughn, a farmer, and his wife Betsy, Matterson. Vaughn was educated at the Baptist Geauga Seminary in Chester, Ohio. In 1852 Vaughn travelled to the Californian goldfields. In 1853 Vaughn arrived in Sydney and became a professional goldminer on the major diggings in New South Wales and Victoria. Vaughn represented Grenfell in the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales from November 1880, and was Secretary for Mines in the fifth Robertson Ministry, from December 1885 to February 1886. He was defeated by George Greene at the general election in 1889. At the general election in 1891 he was again returned for Grenfell as a candidate.
