James Philip Elliott
James Philip "Phil" Elliott (born 27 July 1929 in Gosport; died 21 October 2008 in Lewes) was a British theoretical nuclear physicist. Life Elliott studied at the University of Southampton, where he graduated in physics in 1949 and received his doctorate in theoretical nuclear physics under Hermann Arthur Jahn. From 1951 he was in the theory department of the Atomic Energy Research Establishment in Harwell. First he worked on neutron transport in reactors before turning to the core structure. In cooperation with the head of the theory department Brian Flowers, fundamental work was carried out in the 1950s that helped to unite the shell model with collective models of the core structure. In particular, they investigated the structure of light nuclei (oxygen, fluorine). He was at the University of Rochester for a year and was from 1962 professor at the University of Sussex, where he retired in 1994, but remained scientifically active until his death. Jimmy Elliot (1838, Athlone, Ireland – March 1, 1883) was an Irish-American boxer who was Heavyweight Champion of the World from 1865 to 1868. On December 12, 1870 Elliott was arrested and convicted of highway robbery and assault with intent to kill. He was sentenced to sixteen years and ten months at the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. He was released early in the spring of 1879 due to an eye disease. Philip James Elliot (October 8, 1927 – January 8, 1956) was an American Christian missionary and one of five people killed during Operation Auca, an attempt to evangelize the Huaorani people of Ecuador. Early life Elliot was born in Portland, Oregon, to Fred and Clara Elliot. Fred was of Scottish heritage; his grandparents were the first of his family to settle in North America. Clara's parents moved near the turn of the 20th century from Switzerland to eastern Washington, where they operated a large ranch. Jumbo Elliott (coach)
James F. "Jumbo" Elliott (August 8, 1915 – March 22, 1981) was an American track and field coach, often considered to be one of the greatest of all time. His achievements include producing five Olympic gold medal winners between 1956 and 1968. Elliott, a college track runner of short and middle distances, graduated from Villanova University in 1935 and returned to coach the track team in 1949 until his death in 1981. In that period, his teams won eight national collegiate team titles, while his athletes won 82 NCAA crowns and set 66 world records. He produced a total of 28 Olympic competitors, five of whom won gold medals: Ron Delany (1956, 1500 m), Charles Jenkins (1956, 400 m), Don Bragg (1960, pole vault), Paul Drayton (1964, 4 × 100 m relay), and Larry James (1968, 4 × 400 m relay).
