James Dumaresq
James Dumaresq (1792–1841) was a merchant and fisherman that was the first known resident of L'Anse au Cotard near L'Anse-au-Clair, in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Dumaresq was the first of many Jersey fisherman and merchants to travel to the region now known as the Jersey Trail. Early life James Dumaresq was born in Jersey to Philip Dumaresq and Elizbeth Piton in 1792. L'Anse-au-Clair
L'Anse-au-Clair is a town in the Labrador portion of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The town has a population of 219 in the 2021 census, up from 192 in 2011. It is located on Route 510, about from the Quebec–Labrador border. It was established by the French in the early 18th century. People began to settle in the L'Anse-au-Clair area after the Quebec–Labrador border dispute was settled in 1825. The settlement of L'Anse au Cotard an area near the town is attributed to Jersey fishermen and merchants coming to the region with the earliest known permanent resident being James Dumaresq from the Dumaresq family who decided to build a home in the region around 1810. Descendants of Dumaresq and other Jersey families still inhabit the region and Canada as a whole. The Dumaresq family was a patrician family in the Channel Islands with a particularly strong presence in Jersey. The family would hold many offices and positions throughout the history of Jersey from the 13th century. Origins The family is said to come from Norman origins where the original members of the family arrived in Jersey; however, the family is first mentioned in Jersey during the year 1292 on the Exchequer, 21 Edward I, where it mentions a Jordan Du Maresq who was a Jurat of the Royal Court of Jersey. Elias Dumaresq, Seigneur of Augres, 3rd Seigneur of Augrès (c. 1620-1677) was born to Abraham Dumaresq, 2nd Seigneur of Augrès and Susan de Carteret daughter of Philippe de Carteret I, Philippe de Carteret I, 2nd Seigneur of Sark and his wife Racheal Paulet. He was a Cavalier, Royalist and a Jurat, Jurat of the Royal Court. Civil War Elias was a staunch Royalist during the English Civil War along with his cousins George Carteret and Philippe de Carteret II, Phillip de Carteret, and remained loyal to the crown during the Interregnum (1649–1660), Interregnum. For his loyalty the proclaimed Charles II of England, King Charles II visited him at Les Augrès Manor in 1649 and gave Elias a Grant to the fief of Seigneur of Augres, Augrès, and was then held by Knight-service, Knight's Service.
