James Dewar
Sir James Dewar (20 September 1842 – 27 March 1923) was a British chemist and physicist. He is best known for his invention of the vacuum flask, which he used in conjunction with research into the liquefaction of gases. He also studied atomic and molecular spectroscopy, working in these fields for more than 25 years. Early life James Dewar was born in Kincardine, Perthshire (now in Fife) in 1842, the youngest of six boys of Ann Dewar and Thomas Dewar, a vintner. He was educated at Kincardine Parish School and then Dollar Academy. His parents died when he was 15. He attended the University of Edinburgh where he studied chemistry under Lyon Playfair (later Baron Playfair), becoming Playfair's personal assistant. Dewar also studied under August Kekulé at Ghent. Career In 1875, Dewar was elected Jacksonian professor of natural experimental philosophy at the University of Cambridge, becoming a member of Peterhouse. James Dewar (12 October 1942 – 16 May 2002) was a Scottish musician best known as the bassist and vocalist for Robin Trower and Stone the Crows, the latter having its beginnings as the resident band at Burns Howff in Glasgow. Biography Dewar's career began with Lulu and the Luvvers in the early 1960s. His career eventually reached its zenith with the Robin Trower Band, a British rock power trio, after the 1974 release of the album ''Bridge of Sighs''. Dewar made his mark as an acclaimed blue-eyed soul singer, performing in front of sold-out stadiums and concert halls at the crest of the 1970s classic rock era. The Scot had a rich, powerful voice, with a soulful timbre, and has been regarded by critics as one of the most under-rated rock vocalists. James Dewar (baker)
James Alexander Dewar (February 5, 1897 – June 30, 1985) was a Canadian inventor known for inventing the Twinkie in 1931. Career Dewar began his career in 1920 at the Continental Baking Company that later, through a series of mergers and acquisitions, became Hostess Brands. He started as a delivery boy by delivering pastries by horse-drawn cart. Dewar eventually rose up through the ranks to be a plant manager. In 1931, Dewar's plant was making strawberry shortcakes, but only during strawberry season. Dewar came up with an idea to create a shortcake with cream on the inside instead of strawberries. Having seen a billboard for a shoe company called the "Twinkle Toe Shoe Co.", he was inspired to call his shortcake invention a "Twinkie". James Dewar (1797 – 25 November 1830) was a British jurist and a chief justice of the Supreme Court of Bombay. Early life Dewar was born in Leuchars, Fife. He was the son of Major General David Dewar and Mary Cutler. Dewar was admitted to Middle Temple in 1821 and entitled to practice as a barrister. He married Clementine Wemyss, daughter of William Wemyss in 1826. He lived at Cuttle Hill, Scotland. Career Dewar initially practised in England then moved to British India in June 1827. James Dewar (cricketer)
James William Dewar (9 September 1827 – 19 July 1861) was an English first-class cricketer and British Army officer. The son of Sir James Dewar and his wife, Clementine Wemyss, he was born in British India at Bombay in September 1827. He was educated in England at Winchester College. After leaving Winchester, Dewar purchased a commission as an ensign in the 49th Regiment of Foot in 1846. He purchased the rank of lieutenant in April 1850, with Dewar marrying Kate Jane Dayrell in November of the same year. He served in the British Army in the Crimean War, during which he was present for the Battle of the Alma, the Battle of Inkerman and the Siege of Sevastopol. In the second year of the war, he was promoted to the rank of captain. Following the end of his first marriage, he married Benares Anna de Stieger in November 1855. James Dewar Bourdillon
James Dewar Bourdillon (1811–1883), was a British civil servant in Madras (now Chennai). Life Bourdillon was the second son of the Rev. Thomas Bourdillon, vicar of Fenstanton and Hilton, Huntingdonshire. He was educated partly by his father, and partly at a school at Ramsgate; having been nominated to an Indian writership, he proceeded to Haileybury College in 1828, and in the following year to Madras. After serving in various subordinate appointments in the provinces, he was appointed secretary to the board of revenue, and eventually in 1854 secretary to government in the departments of revenue and public works.
