James Cowie (Australian Settler)
James Cowie (9 January 1809 – 14 November 1892) was an early 19th-century settler of Victoria, Australia, who became a member of both the Victorian Legislative Assembly and Victorian Legislative Council and also served as Mayor of Geelong. Life and work Cowie was born in Falkirk, Scotland, the son of a brewer. After an apprenticeship as a saddler and harness maker in London, Cowie emigrated to Australia in 1840; and, after a spell in Van Diemen's Land, he settled in Geelong, which was then known as Corio. He established a number of successful commercial ventures, including shops and a mining & shipping agency, and he made his fortune during the Victorian gold rush. When the Geelong municipality was formed in 1849, he was among those who provided financial securities for the new body to carry out works and topped the poll in the first elections for the council. Alexander Thomson (pioneer)
Dr. Alexander Thomson (1800 – 1 January 1866) was elected as the first mayor of Geelong and held the position on five occasions from 1850 to 1858. Thomson was the first settler in the area known as Belmont, a suburb of Geelong and called his homestead Kardinia, a property now listed on the Register of the National Estate. Early life Thomson was the son of Alexander Thomson, a shipowner of Aberdeen, Scotland, baptised 28 March 1798. He was educated at Dr Todd's school at Tichfield, Aberdeen University, and at London, where he studied under Sir Everard Home and qualified for the medical profession. In March 1824 he married Barbara Dalrymple. Emigration to colonial Australia In 1825 Thomson sailed to Tasmania (then Van Diemen's Land) as a surgeon on a convict ship, the first of several voyages made by him. This article describes the history of the Australian colony and state of Victoria. Before British colonisation of Australia, many Aboriginal peoples lived in the area now known as Victoria. A couple of years after the first Europeans settled there, in September 1836 the area became part of the colony of New South Wales, known as the District of Port Phillip. Augustus Frederick Adolphus Greeves (7 September 1806 – 23 May 1874) was a Mayor of Melbourne and Member of Parliament in Melbourne, Australia. Greeves was born in Knaresborough, Yorkshire, England and emigrated to the Port Phillip District in New South Wales in 1840. He was one of the first medical men to arrive in Melbourne. He was a surgeon, publican and local councillor and was the List of Mayors and Lord Mayors of Melbourne, Mayor of the City of Melbourne between 1849 and 1850. He was also, for a short time, the editor of the Port Phillip Gazette and the Melbourne Herald, Melbourne Morning Herald.
