James Carney (scholar)
James Patrick Carney (17 May 1914 – 7 July 1989) was a noted Irish Celtic scholar. He was born in Portlaoise, County Laois and was educated at the Christian Brothers school in Synge Street, Dublin. He took his degree at University College Dublin in 1935, before going to Bonn University to study under Rudolf Thurneysen. On returning to Dublin, Carney worked under Osborn Bergin, Gerard Murphy, Richard Irvine Best and T. F. O'Rahilly. He pioneered an approach to early Irish texts which focused on their literary merit and their affinities with the other literatures of the medieval world. His ''Studies in Irish Literature and History'' which appeared in 1956 challenged the 'nativist' approach to Irish literature which had dominated the scholarship of the previous decades. His work on Saint Patrick also proved controversial. Carney had controversial views that Christianity had in fact been an overthrow of the pagan druidic order. James Carney (bishop)
James Francis Carney (June 28, 1915 – September 16, 1990) was a Canadian archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the eighth Archbishop of Vancouver, British Columbia, from 1964 until his death in 1990. He was the first Archbishop of Vancouver born in the city of Vancouver. Early life Carney was born on June 28, 1915, in what was then considered the "southern part" of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. His family was Irish Catholic. He had two brothers—John and Bernard—and one sister, Josephine, who became a nun and is Carney's last surviving sibling. His height was described as "towering". Ordination and priestly life On March 21, 1942, James Carney was ordained a priest by Archbishop William Mark Duke in Vancouver. James Carney (American Priest)
James Francis Carney (1924−1983) was an American missionary who ministered to peasants and left-wing insurgents in Honduras before being killed in that country's armed conflict in 1983. Life Carney was born in Chicago to parents of German and Irish ancestry. His father was a salesman for the Burroughs Adding Machine Corporation, and the family moved around frequently. They were also devoted listeners of the antisemitic Father Charles Coughlin's radio show. Carney graduated from St. Louis University High School in Missouri in 1942, and went on to Saint Louis University on a football scholarship. Despite poor vision and a football-related knee injury, he was drafted and saw service in the European Theatre of World War II as a combat engineer and military policeman. Jim Carney (poet)
Jim Carney is an Irish poet, journalist, and former presenter, best known for ''The Sunday Game''. A native of Parkroe, Milltown, Tuam, and a son of Thomas Carney, he was educated at Milltown National School and Tuam CBS. He is a member of the Tuam Theatre Guild and a journalist with ''The Tuam Herald'', where he has worked alongside subsequent RTÉ western editor Jim Fahy. Carney was later appointed as a journalist and broadcaster with Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ), becoming the first presenter of the now landmark Gaelic games show ''The Sunday Game'' in 1979. Preferring to be behind the camera, Carney moved into commentary after two seasons and remained a commentator and reporter for ''The Sunday Game'' until 2010, also working on the channel's live All-Ireland Hurling and Football Finals coverage as a reporter and interviewer, plus taking extra duties when regular-season live coverage was introduced in 1995. James (Jame) Monroe Carney (born November 29, 1968) is an American former professional cyclist. He has made two Olympic Teams ( 1992 Barcelona, Spain and 2000 Sydney, Australia). In 2000, he placed 5th in the 40 kilometer Points Race, currently the best finish by an American in that event. Since 2002, Jame elevated his coaching efforts and started to take on aspiring young athletes. In 2008, he took the position of Competition Director of the Cheerwine Woman’s Professional Cycling Team. This Team was the #1 ranked Women’s Team in the United States at the conclusion of the season. Over the past 2 years, he has won many of the premiere US Track cycling events.
