James Alexander (1769–1848)
James Alexander (1769 – 12 September 1848) was an Irish-born officer of the British East India Company who sat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom in two periods from 1812 to 1832. Born in County Londonderry, Alexander joined the East India Company in 1784, and later became a partner in a merchant bank in Calcutta. His time in India gained him huge wealth. He returned to the United Kingdom in 1818, and bought an estate in Hampshire. In 1820, he and his brother, Josias, jointly purchased the rotten borough of Old Sarum Old Sarum, in Wiltshire, South West England, is the now ruined and deserted site of the earliest settlement of Salisbury. James Waddel Alexander
James Waddel Alexander (March 13, 1804 – July 31, 1859) was an American Presbyterian minister and theologian who followed in the footsteps of his father, Rev. Archibald Alexander. Early life Alexander was born in 1804 in Louisa County, Virginia, the eldest son of Rev. Archibald Alexander and his wife Janetta Waddel. He was born on the Hopewell estate near present-day Gordonsville at the residence of his maternal grandfather after whom he was named, the blind Presbyterian preacher James Waddel. His younger brothers included William Cowper Alexander (1806–1874), president of the New Jersey State Senate and first president of the Equitable Life Assurance Society, and Joseph Addison Alexander (1809–1860), a biblical scholar. At the time of Alexander's birth, his father was president of Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. James Thomas Alexander
James Thomas Alexander (August 25, 1888 – January 16, 1952) was a United States Navy captain who served as the 37th naval governor of Guam. He served as a commanding officer of ships during both World War I and World War II, receiving the Navy Cross for his actions during the First World War. He was an outspoken advocate for increased naval power and bases to improve American defensive networks. As governor, he improved the defenses of Guam by building additional military facilities, dredging the Apra Harbor, increasing the officers on the island, and building a sea wall. Life Alexander was born on August 25, 1888, and lived much of his life in Kansas. He died on January 16, 1952. Naval career Alexander graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1910. In 1981, he was charged, along with Wolfgang Droege and other white supremacists, with plotting to overthrow the government of Dominica. James Peterkin Alexander
James Peterkin Alexander (June 27, 1835 – April 16, 1912) was a Scottish-born farmer and political figure in Manitoba. He represented Turtle Mountain from 1881 to 1883 and Souris from 1886 to 1888 in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba as a Conservative. He was born June 27, 1835, in Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of William Alexander, and was educated at the normal school and the University of Edinburgh. In 1872, he married Margaret Crawford. Alexander was a Glasgow merchant until 1878 when he was forced out of business by the failure of the City of Glasgow Bank. In November 1879, he emigrated to the Turtle Mountain area of southern Manitoba. Alexander was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1883. He was a magistrate and coroner for the province and served as registrar of deeds for Souris County from 1883 to 1886. General Sir James Edward Alexander (16 October 1803 – 2 April 1885) was a Scottish traveller, author and soldier in the British Army. Alexander was the driving force behind the placement of Cleopatra's Needle on the Thames Embankment. Background Born in Stirling, he was the eldest son of Edward Alexander of Powis, Clackmannanshire, and his second wife Catherine Glas, daughter of John Glas, Provost of Stirling. The family purchased Powis House near Stirling in 1808 from James Mayne (his uncle by marriage) for £26,500. His father, a banker, had to sell Powis House in 1827 on collapse of the Stirling Banking Company. He received his training in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. In 1837, he married Eveline Marie Mitchell, daughter of Col C. C. Mitchell of the Royal Artillery. James Alexander (lawyer)
James Alexander (May 27, 1691 – April 2, 1756) was a Scottish-born lawyer and politician in colonial New York. He served in the Colonial Assembly and as attorney general of the colony in 1721–23. His son William was later a major general in the Continental Army during the American revolution. Alexandria Township, New Jersey was named after James Alexander. Early life Alexander was born in Muthill in Perthshire, Scotland on May 27, 1691, to David Alexander ("of Muthil"). He was a distant relation of the Earl of Stirling and may have received his formal education at the High School of Stirling. He joined the navy, serving on HMS ''Arundell'' in 1712–13, where he learned navigation, mathematics, and astronomy.
