Houston Jail
The Houston Jail is a historic jail building in Houston, Alabama, Houston, Winston County, Alabama. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 5, 1975. History The building is the only known surviving Log cabin, log jail in the state and the only public building surviving from the time that the county seat was located in Houston. It is believed by architectural historians to have been built circa 1868, when the now destroyed courthouse is known to have been constructed. Houston was made the seat in 1858, but the minutes from a grand jury meeting in 1867 reported the need to build a courthouse and a jail. The county seat was moved to Double Springs, Alabama, Double Springs in 1884, resulting in Houston shrinking to the small unincorporated community that it is today. Pottawattamie County Jail
The Pottawattamie County Jail, also known as 'Squirrel Cage Jail' in Council Bluffs, Iowa, United States was built in 1885 and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. The building is a Squirrel Cage Jail, also known as a Rotary Jail. History Construction of the jail was simultaneous with that of the county's new courthouse, which was finished in 1888. It was designed by William H. Brown and Benjamin F. Haugh of Indianapolis, Indiana at a cost of $30,000. The building was one of 18 such jails that were built in the United States and the only one that was three stories tall. Also known as 'Squirrel Cage Jail', it was one of a handful of rotary jails built in the Midwestern America in the mid-19th century. The building was designed for maximum security with minimal contact between the prisoners and the jailers. The Houston County Courthouse and Jail, located at 304 Marshall Street South in Caledonia, Minnesota, Caledonia, Houston County, Minnesota, Houston County in the United States, U.S. state of Minnesota, consists of a Romanesque architecture, Romanesque stone courthouse featuring a prominent center tower, built in 1883 and an Italianate stone jail and sheriff residence built in 1875. Both were designed by C. G. Maybury & Son of Winona, Minnesota, Winona. In the late nineteenth century there was considerable disagreement about the location of the Houston County, Minnesota, Houston County seat. In 1874, Caledonia was named and construction soon began on the jail and sheriff's residence. By 1882 planning began on the courthouse. Construction was by Noonan and Stellwager at a cost of $60,000, and the building was completed in 1885. Barnstable's Old Gaol is a historic colonial jail in Barnstable, Massachusetts. Built 1690, it is the oldest wooden jail in the United States of America. The jail was built by order of the Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay Colony courts. It served as the Barnstable County jail until 1820, when a new stone jail was built. The structure, which held about six prisoners, was eventually attached to a barn. In 1968 it was rediscovered, separated from the barn, and moved 100 feet onto the grounds of the Coast Guard Heritage Museum (located in the old Customshouse building) in Barnstable Village. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and included in the Old King's Highway Historic District in 1987. The Charles Street Jail (built 1851), also known as the Suffolk County Jail, is an infamous former jail (later renovated into a luxury hotel) located at 215 Charles Street, Boston, Massachusetts. It is listed in the state and national Registers of Historic Places. The Liberty Hotel, as it is now known, has retained much of its historic structure, including the famed rotunda. History The jail was proposed by Mayor Martin Brimmer in his 1843 inaugural address as a replacement for the Leverett Street Jail which had been built in 1822. Normally jails of this sort were county institutions, but, since Boston, then and now, dominates Suffolk County, Mayor Brimmer was a key player in the jail's planning and development.
