Jagdish Thakor
Jagdish Thakor (born 1 July 1957) is an Indian National Congress politician from Gujarat, India. He was the member of 15th Lok Sabha of India. He represented the Patan constituency of Gujarat. Thakor belongs to the Koli community of Gujarat. Political Career Thakor began his political career as a student leader in 1973 and won his first Assembly election in 2002. Member of Legislative Assembly (2002-2012) He was elected as MLA from Dahegam in 2002 and 2007. Between 2007-2008 he was the Chief Whip, Congress, Gujarat Legislative Assembly. Member of Parliament (2009-2014) He was MP in the 15th Lok Sabha from Patan Lok Sabha constituency between 2009 and 2014, and lost his seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) is the state unit of the Indian National Congress in Gujarat. Jagdish Thakor is the president of the Committee. Jignesh Mevani (alternatively Mewani; born 11 December 1980) is an Indian politician, lawyer, activist and former journalist serving as the representative of the Vadgam constituency in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly since 2017. He is a member of the Indian National Congress party. He is the convener of the Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch (RDAM). The Koli is an Indian caste found in Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Odisha and Jammu and Kashmir states in India. Koli is an agriculturist caste of Gujarat but in coastal areas they also work as fishermen along with agriculture. Bombay Prohibition (Gujarat Amendment) Act, 2009
The Bombay Prohibition (Gujarat Amendment) Act, 2009 is an Act of Gujarat Legislative Assembly which prohibits manufacture, selling, buying or distributing of ''Laththa'' (spurious liquor). The Act defines ''Laththa'' as spurious liquor, which contains methanol or any other poisonous substances which may cause harmful or injurious effects to the human body or death of a person. The Act also makes it a punishable offence for the person involved in construction or working in any distillery or brewery making ''laththa''. The Act has a provision for death sentence or life imprisonment for those found guilty of manufacturing and selling spurious liquor in cases where those who consumed the spurious liquor have died. Vehicles seized in which the liquor is transported are auctioned and the proceeds deposited in the state government treasury. 2022 Gujarat Toxic Liquor Deaths
On 25 July 2022, at least 42 people died and more than 97 were hospitalized in a methanol poisoning incident in Gujarat, India. The victims had consumed undiluted methyl alcohol (methanol), assuming it to be alcohol. The spurious liquor was then sold to more than 100 people in the villages of Ahmedabad, Botad and Surendranagar. The Gujarat government said that the deaths were caused by "chemical poisoning" caused by 98.71% to 98.99% methanol, illegally sourced from an employee of a chemical packaging company, who sold it to bootleggers from different villages in the Botad district. An investigation is ongoing and fifteen people have been arrested by the police in the incident. Police have said they have recovered 475 litres of the liquid.
