Jacques Bernard D'Anselme
Jacques Bernard Modeste d'Anselme (22 July 1740, Apt – 17 September 1814, Paris) was a French general of the French Revolutionary Army, notable as the first commander of the ''Army of the Var'' which soon became the '' Army of Italy''. He fell under suspicion, was removed from command and placed under arrest, but he survived the Reign of Terror. ANSELME is one of the names inscribed under the Arc de Triomphe, on Column 23. Biography He became a knight of Saint Louis on 18 April 1770. During the American Revolution, he was a lieutenant colonel of the Regiment of Soissons. As lieutenant general, he took Nice and the fortresses of Mont Alban (french: Fort du mont Alban) and Villefranche-sur-Mer in 1792, but was defeated at Sospello and imprisoned until the revolution of Thermidor. Gaspard Jean-Baptiste Brunet
Gaspard Jean-Baptiste Brunet (14 June 1734 – 15 November 1793) commanded the French '' Army of Italy'' during the French Revolutionary Wars and was executed during the Reign of Terror. Despite this fate his son Jean Baptiste Brunet also became a French general. From the minor nobility, he entered the French Royal Army as a gunner in 1755, transferred to an infantry unit and fought in the Seven Years' War. He received the Order of Saint-Louis and was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1779. He became ''maréchal de camp'' ( general of brigade) in 1791 and served in the ''Army of Italy'' under Jacques Bernard d'Anselme in 1792. After a brief stint as interim army commander in the winter of 1792–93, he was promoted general of division and assumed the duties of commander-in-chief from May to August 1793. Pierre Larousse
Pierre Athanase Larousse (23 October 18173 January 1875) was a French grammarian, lexicographer and encyclopaedist. He published many of the outstanding educational and reference works of 19th-century France, including the 15-volume ''Grand dictionnaire universel du XIXe siècle''. Early life Pierre Larousse was born in Toucy, where his father was a blacksmith. At the age of sixteen he won a scholarship at the teaching school in Versailles. Four years later, he returned to Toucy to teach in a primary school, but became frustrated by the archaic and rigid teaching methods. In 1840 he moved to Paris to improve his own education by taking free courses. Career From 1848 to 1851 he taught at a private boarding school, where he met his future wife, Suzanne Caubel (although they did not marry until 1872).
