Jacksonville State Gamecocks Softball
The Jacksonville State Gamecocks softball team represents Jacksonville State University in NCAA Division I college softball. As of July 1, 2023 the team participates in the Conference USA Conference (C-USA). Prior to the move they were in the ASUN, a league in which it had been a member from 1995 to 2003. Prior to that JSU played in the OVC. The Gamecocks are currently led by head coach Jana McGinnis. Coach McGinnis played basketball at JSU from 1987-1990. Assistant coaches are Mark Wisener and Julie Boland. The team plays its home games at University Field located on the university's campus. The Gamecocks reached the NCAA Super Regionals in 2009. The Gamecocks beat the University of Tennessee to advance. NCAA Division I Softball Championship
The NCAA Division I softball tournament is held annually in May/June and features 64 college softball teams in the United States, culminating in the Women's College World Series (WCWS), which is played in Oklahoma City. Tournament play and team selection The tournament is unique in that it features four tiers of competition and a loss does not necessarily eliminate a team from contention. In fact, throughout the entire tournament a team can lose a total of four games and still be crowned champions. A total of 64 teams compete in the tournament. 32 teams gain automatic entry into the tournament while the other 32 are selected by the Division I Softball committee. From this field of 64, 16 teams will be given "national seeds" and placed at one of the assigned regional sites, often the home field of each national seed. The 2016 NCAA Division I softball tournament was held from May 20 through June 8, 2016 as the final part of the 2016 NCAA Division I softball season. The 64 NCAA Division I college softball teams were to be selected out of an eligible 293 teams on May 15, 2016. Thirty-two teams were awarded an automatic bid as champions of their conference, and thirty-two teams were selected at-large by the NCAA Division I softball selection committee. ASUN Conference
The ASUN Conference, formerly the Atlantic Sun Conference, is a collegiate athletic conference operating mostly in the Southeastern United States. The league participates at the NCAA Division I level, and began sponsoring football at the Division I FCS level in 2022. University Field is a 2,000-seat softball stadium on the east side of the campus of Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. Per Physical Plant Director Dave Thompson, the bleacher seating capacity is 525 but could be pushed to 600 if needed. It serves as the home field of the Jacksonville State Gamecocks softball team and served as the home field of the Jacksonville State Gamecocks baseball team until 1995, when that team moved to Rudy Abbott Field on the west side of campus. Gulf South Conference
The Gulf South Conference (GSC) is a college athletic conference affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level, which operates in the Southeastern United States. History Originally known as the Mid-South Athletic Conference or Mid-South Conference, the Gulf South Conference was formed by six universities in the summer of 1970: Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee–Martin, and Troy State (now Troy).
