Jack Ryan (baseball Catcher)
John Bernard Ryan (November 12, 1868 – August 21, 1952) was a Major League Baseball catcher. He played from 1889 to 1913 in the American Association, National League and American League. He is one of only 29 players in baseball history to date to have appeared in Major League games in four decades. Ryan was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts to Irish immigrants. He played baseball from an early age and began playing professionally by age 18. He was a manager in the minor leagues in 1909–1911, 1922–1923, 1926, and 1928–1929. Catcher
Catcher is a Baseball positions, position in baseball and softball. When a Batter (baseball), batter takes their at bat, turn to hit, the catcher crouches behind home plate, in front of the (home plate, home) Umpire (baseball), umpire, and receives the ball from the pitcher. In addition to this primary duty, the catcher is also called upon to master many other skills in order to field the position well. The role of the catcher is similar to that of the wicket-keeper in cricket. Positioned behind home plate and facing toward the outfield, the catcher can see the whole field, and is therefore in the best position to direct and lead the other players in a defensive play. Playing Major League Baseball in four decades has been attained by only 31 players in the league's history, dating from the 1870s to the present day. Introduction Since 1900 (the first year that a player could play in a "fourth decade"), every completed decade except the 1940s has added at least one player to the list. Outside of skill and durability, a player must usually have some "generational luck" to have started his career in the later years of a decade, so that if he is still playing 21–24 years later, he is playing in the early years of a fourth decade. For example, Albert Pujols started his career in 2001, so he would have had to play 30 seasons to make the list. Whereas Bill Buckner, whose career started in the last year of the 1960s, finished his career in the first year of the 1990s, requiring only 22 seasons to make the list.
