Jack Miller (10 August 1906 – October 1978) also known by the nickname of "Cod", due to his profession as a Fishmonger, was an English professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. He played at representative level for Great Britain and England, and at club level for Warrington, Huddersfield (World War II guest) and Leigh, as a , or . Over his 20-year career he made 526 appearances for Warrington, a club record which was broken in 1959 by Brian Bevan. Background Jack Miller was born in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, England. Newton-le-Willows
Newton-le-Willows is a market town in the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens, Merseyside, England. The population at the 2011 census was 22,114. Newton-le-Willows is on the eastern edge of St Helens, south of Wigan and north of Warrington. The Newton township was historically largely pastoral lands, with the mining industry encroaching from the north and the west as time went on. The township (often referred to as Newton in Makersfield at that time) is documented since at least the 12th century. In the early 19th century the township saw significant urban development to support the construction of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. Rugby League County Cups
Historically, English rugby league clubs competed for the Lancashire Cup and the Yorkshire Cup, known collectively as the county cups. The leading rugby clubs in Yorkshire had played in a cup competition (affectionately known as ''t’owd tin pot'') for several years prior to the schism of 1895. However, the Lancashire authorities had refused to sanction a similar tournament, fearing it would lead to professionalism. After the split, the replacement for the Yorkshire Cup was not immediately introduced; however, new Yorkshire and Lancashire Cups were introduced in the 1905–06 season. The county cups were played on the same basis as the Challenge Cup, with an open draw and straight knock-out matches leading to a final. The county cups were abandoned in 1993 due to the more successful clubs complaining about overloaded fixtures, but the Yorkshire Cup was revived in 2019. The 1944–45 Northern Rugby Football Union season was the sixth (and would be the last) season of the rugby league’s Wartime Emergency League necessitated by the Second World War. As in the previous (fifth) Wartime season, the clubs each played a different number of games, but this season clubs re-joined the league and there were now 17 of the original clubs taking part in the Competition (but still only Oldham, St Helens and Wigan from west of the Pennines). The Challenge Cup is a knockout rugby league cup competition organised by the Rugby Football League, held annually since 1896, with the exception of 1915–1919 and 1939–1940, due to World War I and World War II respectively. Bradford Bulls
The Bradford Bulls are a professional rugby league club in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, playing in the Championship. They have won five Challenge Cups, six league championships and three World Club Challenges. The team jersey is predominantly white with red, amber and black chevrons. In 1907, Bradford F.C., founder member of the Rugby Football League, switched codes to association football and Bradford Northern, often abbreviated to Northern, was formed by members who wished to continue rugby. Bradford Northern were renamed Bradford Bulls in 1996, at the start of Super League. Bradford's main rivalries are with Leeds, Halifax and Huddersfield. The 1937–38 Rugby Football League season was the 43rd season of rugby league football. Season summary Hunslet won their second, and to date last, Championship when they defeated Leeds 8-2 in the play-off final. They had also finished the regular season as the league leaders. The final was due to have taken place at Belle Vue, Wakefield, but as both clubs were from Leeds, the Rugby Football League switched the match to Elland Road in Leeds, with the final being played on 30 April 1938 in front of a crowd of 54,112. The Challenge Cup Winners were Salford who beat Barrow 7-4 in the final. Warrington won the Lancashire League, and Leeds won the Yorkshire League. The Barrow Raiders are a semi-professional rugby league team in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. The club was formed in 1875 as Barrow Football Club. For the 1995–96 and 1996 seasons the club was known as Barrow Braves, becoming the Barrow Border Raiders for the 1997 season following a merger with Carlisle Border Raiders, dropping the Border part of the name in 2002 to become the Barrow Raiders. Salford won their second Rugby Football League Championship when they beat Swinton 15-5 in the play-off final. They had also finished the regular season as league leaders.
