Jack Lawrence (songwriter)
Jack Lawrence (born Jacob Louis Schwartz, April 7, 1912 – March 16, 2009) was an American songwriter. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1975. Life and career Jack Lawrence was born in Brooklyn, New York to an Orthodox Jewish family of modest means as the third of four sons. His parents Barney (Beryl) Schwartz and Fanny (Fruma) Goldman Schwartz were first cousins who had run away from their home in Bila Tserkva, Ukraine to go to America in 1904. Lawrence wrote songs while still a child, but because of parental pressure after he graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, he enrolled in the First Institute of Podiatry, where he received a D.P.M. degree in 1932. The same year, his first song was published and he immediately decided to make a career of songwriting rather than podiatry. Jack Lawrence (born 1975 in Canterbury, Kent) is a British comics creator. Prior to 2002 he also worked as an animator. Career Early beginnings Lawrence took a General Art and Design BTEC First Diploma at Canterbury Technical College, then went on to the KIAD at Canterbury to study for a BTEC National in the same subject. After becoming disenchanted with art education, he then worked "regular" jobs to train himself in the field he wanted to be in. In 2000, he became a character animator for the UK-based Web design company Lightmaker. He worked there for three years before becoming a freelance artist. Lawrence came onto the comics scene with his own title, ''Darkham Vale'', which he created, wrote, and drew, with the series running for ten issues. It received acclaim, especially for a new creator and a small publisher. He went on to find success with '' Lions, Tigers and Bears'', written by Mike Bullock and published by Image. Jack Lawrence is an American bluegrass guitarist. He was Doc Watson's performing partner since the early 1980s. As major influences, Lawrence cites Doc Watson, Clarence White, and Django Reinhardt. Biography Early years Lawrence was raised in Charlotte, North Carolina His father began work as a sound engineer for a local music hall when Lawrence was age 10. This allowed him to meet and learn from some performers such as Buck Owens, Don Rich, Bill Monroe, George Shuffler, and Flatt and Scruggs. In his teens, Lawrence played in local folk and bluegrass groups. A job with luthier C. E. Ward in Charlotte introduced Lawrence to Carl Story, and landed him his first professional job in 1970. "Little" Jack Lawrence (born December 18, 1976) is an American musician from Covington, Kentucky, currently living in Nashville, Tennessee. Career Lawrence currently plays bass guitar in The Raconteurs, The Greenhornes, The Dead Weather and City and Colour as well as the autoharp and banjo in Blanche (band), Blanche. He also guested on the theme song to the 2008 Bond film ''Quantum of Solace'' entitled "Another Way To Die", playing bass guitar and baritone guitar. On May 22, 2009, Lawrence married photographer Jo McCaughey at Jack White's house in Nashville in a double ceremony with Meg White and Jackson Smith. Lawrence contributed to the soundtrack of the 2009 Spike Jonze film ''Where the Wild Things Are (film), Where the Wild Things Are''. Jack Lawrence (born 21 March 1897; date of death unknown) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1910s and 1920s. He played for South Sydney in the NSWRL competition during which the club won 5 premierships in 11 seasons. Lawrence was the older brother of Vic Lawrence who played for South Sydney in the 1920s. Playing career Lawrence made his first grade debut for Souths against North Sydney in Round 1 1918 at North Sydney Oval. Lawrence would go on to win a premiership with Souths in his debut season as the club finished first on the table and were declared premiers without needing to play in a grand final.
