Jack Lambert (American Actor)
John Thomas Lambert (April 13, 1920 – February 18, 2002) was an American character actor who specialized in playing movie tough guys and heavies. He is best known for playing the psychotic cat-loving, iron-hooked Steve "the Claw" Michel in ''Dick Tracy's Dilemma''. Career Following a spell on Broadway, the Yonkers, New York-born Lambert moved to Hollywood and began working in films in 1942. He was a familiar figure in Westerns and crime dramas after World War II, in such movies as ''The Killers'' with Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner, '' The Enforcer'' with Humphrey Bogart, ''Bend of the River'' with James Stewart, '' Vera Cruz'' with Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster, ''Kiss Me Deadly'' with Ralph Meeker as Mike Hammer, and '' How the West Was Won''. ''Dick Tracy's Dilemma'', released in the United Kingdom as ''Mark of the Claw'', is a 1947 American action film based on the Dick Tracy, 1930s comic-strip character of the same name created by Chester Gould. Ralph Byrd stars as Dick Tracy, reprising the role after Republic Pictures's 1937 ''Dick Tracy (serial), Dick Tracy'' serial film, serial and its three sequels. Preceded by ''Dick Tracy vs. Cueball'', the film is the third installment of the Dick Tracy#Early feature films, ''Dick Tracy'' film series released by RKO Radio Pictures. Michael Hammer is a fictional character created by the American author Mickey Spillane. Hammer debuted in the 1947 book ''I, the Jury''. Hammer is a no-holds-barred private investigator who carries a Colt .45 M1911A1 in a shoulder holster under his left arm. His love for his secretary Velda is outweighed only by his willingness to kill a killer. Hammer's best friend is Pat Chambers, Captain of Homicide NYPD. Hammer was a World War II army veteran who spent two years fighting jungle warfare in the Pacific Ocean theater of World War II against Japan. Creation In 1946, Spillane, an established comic-book writer, worked with illustrator Mike Roy and Edwin Robbins to create the private-eye character Mike Danger for proposed comic-book or comic-strip publication. Unable to sell the project as a comic, he reworked the story as the novel ''I, the Jury'', converting Mike Danger to Mike Hammer and supporting character Holly to Velda.
