James Herbert "Jack" Knight (March 14, 1892 – February 24, 1945) was an American pilot who made the first overnight transcontinental air mail delivery. Knight was part of an airmail relay team that flew 2,629 miles across the United States on February 22–23, 1921 in an effort to show that the airmail service was much faster than the railroads. When all the other pilots were weathered-in or broken-down, Knight flew extra relay sections through the night in snow and fog and is credited with saving the airmail service from political decommission. "Jack Knight's Night Flight" made him the most famous pilot in America in the era prior to Charles Lindbergh. Early life Knight was born March 14, 1892 in Lincoln Center, Kansas as James Herbert Brockett. Elmer Russell "Jack" Knight (January 12, 1895 – July 30, 1976) was an American right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball. Born in Pittsboro, Mississippi, he played from 1922 to 1927, pitching in 72 games for the St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Braves. He worked as a minor-league manager for the Cleveland Indians, Brooklyn Dodgers, and Chicago Cubs for several years after his playing career ended. Jack 'Cracker' Knight (21 November 1912 – 17 July 1976) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood and both played for and coached St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). A ruckman from South Bendigo, Knight wasn't selected in Collingwood's 1935 premiership team despite playing in the Preliminary Final. He made up for it by participating in the 1936 Grand Final, where he played in a forward pocket and kicked a goal in the win. Orie Albert "Jack" Knight (September 24, 1902 – April 16, 1981) was an American labor unionist. Born in New Hampton, Iowa, Knight worked in highway construction before moving to East Chicago, Indiana, to work for Shell Oil. He rose to become a stillman, and joined what became the Oil Workers' International Union. In 1933, he helped the union establish itself in Hammond, Indiana, and he then began working full-time as a union organizer, mostly in California. In 1940, Knight was elected as president of the union, and under his leadership, its membership grew steadily. The union was affiliated to the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), and in 1947, he was elected as a vice-president of the CIO. He represented the CIO in the unity negotiations which produced the AFL–CIO in 1955, becoming one of its vice-presidents, and also chair of its Interamerican Affairs Committee.
