J. W. Sexton High School
J. W. Sexton High School is a public school located on the western edge of Lansing, Michigan, United States, in the Lansing School District. The principal is currently Daniel Boggan. The Sexton J-Dubbs are members of the Capital Area Activities Conference. The school has a fierce rivalry with the Everett Vikings of Everett High School on the south side of the city. In March 2012 the Lansing School District announced that Sexton would house 7-12 grades beginning in the 2012–2013 school year. Building and architecture Of the Lansing high schools, J. W. Denzel Robert Valentine (born November 16, 1993) is an American professional basketball player for the Maine Celtics of the NBA G League. He played college basketball for the Michigan State Spartans. As a senior, Valentine became the first player in Michigan State history to be recognized as the National Player of the Year by the Associated Press. Dave Porter (sportsman)
Dave Porter (March 5, 1946 – August 25, 2012), was a two-time NCAA collegiate wrestling champion and football player. He was inducted into the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor in 1985. Student wrestler and football player Porter attended Lansing Sexton High School in Lansing, Michigan. He then accepted a scholarship to attend the University of Michigan where he competed on the wrestling and football teams. As a collegiate wrestler, Porter was a three-time All-American and won NCAA championships as a heavyweight in 1966 and 1968 and compiled a three-year record of 51 wins and three losses, for a 94.4% winning percentage. In NCAA wrestling tournaments, Porter had a 13-1 record. Porter received the 1968 Michigan Senior Athlete Award and still holds several Michigan wrestling records, including 32 falls. Jimmy Mataya
Mataya started shooting pool at age 11. Within a few years was playing exhibitions with Willie Mosconi. He then won three consecutive Michigan State Championships in 1966, 1967 and 1968. At 21, he won the 1971 Los Angeles 9-Ball Championship. Mataya won multiple titles in his career and in 1989 became a member of the Greater Lansing Area Sports Hall of Fame. In 1982, Mataya wed Ewa Svensson, of Sweden (who was later inducted into Billiard Congress of America's Hall of Fame as Ewa Laurance in 2004), forming pool's first "power couple". Larry Foster (baseball)
Larry Lynn Foster (born December 24, 1937) is an American former professional baseball player. The right-handed pitcher attended Michigan State University before signing a professional contract with the Detroit Tigers prior to the 1958 season. He had an eight-season professional career, but appeared in only one Major League game for the Tigers on September 18, 1963. He batted left-handed, stood tall and weighed . In that game, against the Minnesota Twins at Metropolitan Stadium, Foster pitched the sixth and seventh innings in relief of Willie Smith. Michigan State Spartans
The Michigan State Spartans are the athletic teams that represent Michigan State University. The school's athletic program includes 23 varsity sports teams. Their mascot is a Spartan warrior named Sparty, and the school colors are green and white. The university participates in the NCAA's Division I and the Football Bowl Subdivision for football.
