J. W. Graham Medal
The J.W. Graham Medal in Computing and Innovation is an award given annually by the University of Waterloo and the University of Waterloo Faculty of Mathematics to "recognize the leadership and many innovative contributions made to the University of Waterloo, and to the Canadian computer industry." Recipients of this award receive a gold medal and certificate. Recipients are graduates of the University of Waterloo Faculty of Mathematics from business, education, or government. The medal was established in 1994 to recognize Canadian computer industry veteran James Wesley Graham (known as "Wes Graham"). Graham was born in Copper Cliff, Ontario on January 17, 1932. He enrolled in the University of Toronto in 1950, and graduated with a BA in Mathematics and Physics in 1954, and an MA in Mathematics in 1955. Tas Tsonis is a computer scientist who continues to play a prominent role in using graphical algorithms, computer science, and computational geometry to automate the personalization of apparel and accessories. He has been granted twelve US patents based on mathematical and graphical algorithms. Tsonis co-founded Pulse Microsystems in 1982, with Brian Goldberg. Pulse is credited with ''"the first set of pattern archiving software, network management software and data acquisition software for embroidery industry."'' They patented methods to take artwork, stored using scalable vector graphics, and translate those into instruction for knitting and embroidery machines, enabling artwork to be incorporated into fabrics at the best resolution possible for the fabric under construction. Steven Jeromy Carrière is a Canadian computer software engineer. Carrière is a graduate of the University of Waterloo in Canada. He was technical staff member at Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute working on practical software architectural reconstruction and analysis. Eric Veach is a Canadian computer scientist known for his research on improvements to Monte Carlo sampling in Computer Graphics, which won him two technical academy awards. Education and career Veach obtained a Bachelor of Mathematics degree in 1990 at the University of Waterloo. In 1997, he graduated with a PhD from Stanford University. His thesis is titled ''Robust Monte Carlo Methods for Light Transport Simulation'', a highly cited paper in Computer Graphics.
