Jarvis J. Russell (born October 12, 1998) is an American football linebacker for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Memphis. Early life Russell was born October 12, 1998, in Grenada, Mississippi, where he attended Grenada High School. College career In 2017, Russell enrolled at the University of Memphis. In 2021, he led the Tigers with 123 tackles, being named first-team All- American Athletic Conference. Professional career Russell went undrafted in the 2022 NFL draft but signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent on May 2, 2022. He was waived on August 30 but re-signed to the practice squad on August 31. Linebacker (LB) is a playing position in gridiron football. Linebackers are members of the defensive team, and line up three to five yards behind the line of scrimmage and the defensive linemen. They are the "middle ground" of defenders, playing closer to the line of scrimmage than the defensive backs (secondary), but farther back than the defensive linemen. In sports, the practice squad, also called the taxi squad or practice roster, is a group of players signed by a team but not part of their main roster. Frequently used in gridiron football, they serve as extra players during the team's practices, often as part of the scout team by emulating an upcoming opponent's play style. Because the players on the practice squad are familiar with the team's plays and formations, the practice squad serves as a way to develop inexperienced players for promotion to the main roster.
