J. J. Miller
John ("J. J.") Miller (born 28 April 1933 in Fremantle, Western Australia) is a former champion jockey and horse trainer. Miller rode more than 2200 winners in a career which started with his first win after just six races in 1947. He rode his last race in 1988 and then went on to a successful career as a trainer. He rode winners in all Australian states as well as enjoying overseas success in England, Mauritius, Ireland and Singapore. Miller was often controversial during his career, frequently being in dispute with racing stewards and often being banned from racing for extended periods as a result.''W.A. Baldivis is a semi-rural residential suburb south of Perth, and southeast of the regional centre of Rockingham. It is located within the City of Rockingham local government area. Laurie Connell
Lawrence Robert "Laurie" Connell (died 27 February 1996) was a Western Australian business entrepreneur. As chairman of the Rothwells merchant bank, he was well known for his dealings with the Government of Western Australia and his close relationships with a former premier of Western Australia, Brian Burke, and with entrepreneur Alan Bond, during the WA Inc period in the mid to late 1980s. Laurie Connell was the grandson of a long-serving Western Australia Police Commissioner, Robert Connell (1867–1956) commissioner 1913–1933. In 1994, Connell was jailed for conspiring to pervert the course of justice by paying a jockey to leave the country. Railway Stakes (Perth Racing)
The Railway Stakes is an Australian Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race under handicap race conditions over a distance of 1600 metres at Ascot Racecourse in Perth in late November. Prizemoney is A$1,500,000. History The inaugural running of the event was held on Perth Cup day in 1887 with stakes of 60 sovereigns when the three-year-old Nimrod won the event over Hermit. The following season the race was held on New Year's Day 1889 and in the renewal of the race Hermit won the race while Nimrod finished third. The event continued to be part of the Western Australian Turf Club's Summer Carnival with the race being scheduled on the same day as the Perth Cup. In 2001 the WATC rescheduled the event to late November. From 2011 to 2015 the race date was considered the richest day in thoroughbred racing in Perth, known as Super Saturday, with the Winterbottom Stakes, WA Guineas and several other Listed Races. Jockey
A jockey is someone who rides horses in horse racing or steeplechase racing, primarily as a profession. The word also applies to camel riders in camel racing. The word "jockey" originated from England and was used to describe the individual who rode horses in racing. They must be light, typically around a weight of 100-120 lb., and physically fit. They are typically self-employed and are paid a small fee from the horse trainer and a percentage of the horse's winnings. Jockeys are mainly male, though there are some well-known female jockeys too. The job has a very high risk of debilitating or life-threatening injuries. Etymology The word is by origin a diminutive of ''jock'', the Northern English or Scots colloquial equivalent of the first name ''John'', which is also used generically for "boy" or "fellow" (compare ''Jack'', ''Dick''), at least since 1529.
