J. Braxton Craven, Jr.
James Braxton Craven Jr. (April 3, 1918 – May 3, 1977) was a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and previously was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina. Education and career Born in Lenoir, North Carolina, Craven received an Artium Baccalaureus degree from Duke University in 1939 and a Bachelor of Laws from Harvard Law School in 1942. He was a solicitor for Burke County, North Carolina in 1947. He was in private practice of law in Charlotte and Asheville, North Carolina from 1948 to 1956. He was an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina from 1948 to 1952. Governor Luther H. The Superior Court is North Carolina's general jurisdiction trial court. It was established in 1777 and is North Carolina's oldest court. Jurisdiction and administration The Superior Court is the trial court of general jurisdiction in North Carolina. It hears all felony cases and certain misdemeanor cases. In civil matters, superior courts have original jurisdiction over civil disputes with an amount in controversy exceeding $25,000. (This amount was formerly $10,000, but this jurisdictional amount was increased effective August 1, 2013).
