J.N.B. Crim House
J. N. B. Crim House is a historic home located at Elk City, West Virginia, Elk City, Barbour County, West Virginia. It was built in 1874–1875, and is a two-story, L-shaped, Italianate architecture, Italianate style brick house. It features an entrance portico with a flat roof supported by eight wrought iron columns. Joseph Napoleon Bonaparte Crim (1835–1905), for whom it was built, was a prominent local merchant and banker. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. West Virginia Route 57 is an east–west state highway in northern West Virginia. The western terminus of the route is at West Virginia Route 20 a half-mile north of Romines Mills, West Virginia, Romines Mills and southeast of Clarksburg, West Virginia, Clarksburg. The eastern terminus is at U.S. Route 119 southwest of Philippi, West Virginia, Philippi. The road acts as an ideal connector road between Philippi and Clarksburg as the road has few sharp curves and, as a state route, is better maintained than other area roads. Barbour County, West Virginia
Barbour County is a county in North-Central West Virginia West Virginia, United States. At the 2020 census, the population was 15,465. The county seat is Philippi, which was chartered in 1844. Both county and city were named for Philip P. Barbour (1783–1841), a U.S. Congressman from Virginia and Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. The county was formed in 1843 when the region was still part of the state of Virginia. In 1871, a small part of Barbour County was transferred to Tucker County, West Virginia. The Battle of Philippi, also known as the "Philippi Races", was fought in Barbour County on June 3, 1861. Although a minor action, it is generally considered the first land engagement of the American Civil War. Alderson Broaddus University, an American Baptist institution, is in the county. Italianate Architecture
The Italianate style was a distinct 19th-century phase in the history of Classical architecture. Peck-Crim-Chesser House
The Peck-Crim-Chesser House is a historic home located at Philippi, Barbour County, West Virginia, US. It was built in 1884, and is a large, two-story red brick house on a limestone foundation. It features highly pitched multiple gables and tall chimneys with corbeled caps. The house is a significant local example of Late Victorian architecture, and was for many years associated with descendants and members of the locally prominent Peck and Crim families.
