J-Setting
J-Setting is a style of dance popularized by the Prancing J-Settes, the popular collegiate women's danceline of Jackson State University's Sonic Boom of the South marching band. It originated in the late 1970s from African-Americans in the Jackson, Mississippi, area of the United States. This dance style is characterized by a lead and follow format where one dancer initiates a series of high-energy dance moves, and the other dancers join in the movement. J-Setting features specific dance steps based on Prancing J-Settes marching techniques including the "J-Sette Walk," the "Salt and Pepper," the "Strut," and the "Tip Toe". In particular, the "Salt and Pepper" is a type of prance step for which the Prancing J-Settes are named and known. It is a high-knee lift or "high step" style of marching. Jackson State University (Jackson State or JSU) is a public historically black research university in Jackson, Mississippi. The Prancing Elites Project
''The Prancing Elites Project'' is an American reality television series that premiered on April 22, 2015, on Oxygen. Announced in September 2014, the series follows a five-member dance team as they juggle their personal and professional lives in Mobile, Alabama. The cast members include Adrian Clemons, Kentrell Collins, Kareem Davis, Jerel Maddox and Tim Smith. The dance team is described by the network as "the African American, gay and gender non-conforming." The show was subsequently renewed for a second season, which premiered on January 19, 2016. However, the show has been canceled and will not return after the summer of 2017 according to Oxygen TV. Sonic Boom Of The South
The Sonic Boom of the South is the marching band of Jackson State University (JSU) located in Jackson, Mississippi, US. History The marching band began in the 1940s at what was then Jackson State College, under the directorship of Frederick D. Hall, who had directed a band at the college as early as the 1920s, in addition to the chorus and orchestra. It was initially made up of students from Jackson College and Lanier High School. Founded as the Jackson State University Marching Band, the name "Sonic Boom of the South" was adopted by director Harold J. Haughton Sr. in 1971, having been suggested by band members. The first fulltime band director, William W. Davis, was appointed in 1948, replacing Charles Saulsburg, who had been director since 1947. Davis had previously played trumpet in Cab Calloway's band, and Calloway's musical style and showmanship influenced Davis's conceptualization of the marching band. Great Big Story was a media company producing micro-documentaries based in New York with offices in London. Launched in October 2015 by CNN, the company created 2,600 videos, being published on various websites such as Facebook and YouTube. Videos produced by the company featured varied subjects conducting their routine of their unusual or intriguing acts. Great Big Story employed a total of duty 84 staff members, spread across its three locations. At the head of the company was Andrew Morse and Courtney Coupe. Atlanta Black Pride started in 1996 and is one of two officially recognized festivals for the African-American LGBT community. It is held in Atlanta each year at the end of August and beginning of September (week of Labor Day holiday).
