Nagashima In Kagoshima Prefecture Ja
was a series of fortresses and fortifications controlled by the Ikkō-ikki, a sect of warrior monks in Japan's Sengoku period who opposed samurai rule. It was attacked and destroyed by Oda Nobunaga in the 1570s. This, combined with the surrender of the Ikki's other main fortress, Ishiyama Hongan-ji, several years later, ended the threat the Ikko-ikki posed to Nobunaga and other ''samurai'' conquerors. The fortress was situated on a swampy delta, on the border of Owari and Ise Provinces, at the point where three rivers converge, to the southwest of the modern-day city of Nagoya. Nagashima was in fact a number of smaller fortifications surrounding two primary buildings and not a single fortress. Nagashima Castle was built in 1555 by Ito Shigeharu, and seized by the Ikkō-ikki shortly afterwards, in much the same way they had seized a number of other daimyōs' holdings. were first-level administrative divisions of Japan from the 600s to 1868. Provinces were established in Japan in the late 7th century under the Ritsuryō law system that formed the first central government. Each province was divided into and grouped into one of the geographic regions or circuits known as the ''Gokishichidō'' (Five Home Provinces and Seven Circuits). Provincial borders often changed until the end of the Nara period (710 to 794), but remained unchanged from the Heian period (794 to 1185) until the Edo period (1603 to 1868). Saikaidō
is a Japanese geographical term. It means both an ancient division of the country and the main road running through it. Saikaido was one of the main circuits of the Gokishichidō system, which was originally established during the Asuka period. This name identified the geographic region of Kyūshū and the islands of Tsushima and Iki. It consisted of nine ancient provinces and two islands.Compare Nankaidō, which includes all of Shikoku, is the "southern sea circuit" and Tōkaidō is the "eastern sea circuit", made famous by the wood-block prints of Hokusai and Hiroshige. Nagashima, Kagoshima
is a town located in Izumi District, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. Demography On March 20, 2006 the town of Azuma, from Izumi District, was merged into Nagashima. As of April 2017, the town has an estimated population of 10,124 and a density of 87 persons per km². The total area is 116.13 km². Geography Nagashima Island, comprising the majority of city area, is located just south of Amakusa and connected to mainland Kyūshū via the bridge. It is primarily a farming and fishing community. Economy Nagashima's chief exports are sweet potatoes, shōchū, and yellowtail. Some of Kagoshima's most well known shōchū is distilled in Nagashima.
