Ivy Josiah
Ivy Nallammah Josiah is a teacher and activist in Malaysia. She has been a pioneer in setting up the Women's Aid Organisation that provides help and refuge to women fleeing from domestic violence in Malaysia. Early life Josiah was born in Kuala Lumpur and grew up in Brickfields. Her parents were originally from Jaffna in Sri Lanka but her father came to Malaysia to work for the colonial government. Eventually, Josiah's father returned home to Jaffna, married Josiah's mother and moved back to Malaysia. Career For more than 15 years, Josiah was Executive Director of the Women's Aid Organisation (WAO), a Malaysian organisation which helps abused women and children. Through her contributions, Josiah has been described as helping to "put domestic violence on the national agenda". The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections ( ms, Gabungan Pilihanraya Bersih dan Adil) or Bersih (meaning ''clean'' in Malay) is a coalition of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) which seeks to reform the current electoral system in Malaysia to improve its democracy by ensuring free, clean and fair elections among other reforms. The idea of Bersih was initiated by five opposition parties in 2005 which later included other NGOs in this as well. It was officially formed on 23 November 2006 as a joint communiqué that comprised leaders from political parties, civil society groups and NGOs. The Emergency (Public Order and Crime Prevention) Ordinance, 1969 ( ms, Ordinan Darurat (Ketenteraman Awam dan Mencegah Jenayah), 1969), commonly abbreviated as the Emergency Ordinance (EO), was a Malaysian law whose most well-known provision allows for indefinite detention without trial. S.M.K. Convent Bukit Nanas (abbreviated CBN) is an all-girls school located at Bukit Nanas, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Established in 1899, it is one of the oldest schools in Malaysia and is widely known as CBN.
