Ivor Francis (painter)
Ivor Pengelly Francis (13 March 1906 – 6 November 1993) was an artist and art critic and teacher in South Australia. He has been called South Australia's premier surrealist painter. Biography Ivor Francis was born in Uckfield, England and emigrated to South Australia on the ''Moreton Bay'' in 1924 as a Barwell Boys, Barwell scheme "apprentice farm boy", and went to work at Oolooloo station at Elliston, South Australia, Elliston on Eyre Peninsula. He joined the Adelaide Teachers College in 1925 and on qualifying started teaching at Jamestown, South Australia, Jamestown in 1929, then Prospect, South Australia from 1930. He took classes part-time at the South Australian School of Arts and Crafts, School of Arts and Crafts 1928–1940, where he developed a long-term friendship with fellow-artist Mary Packer Harris (no relation to Max Harris). Uckfield
Uckfield () is a town in the Wealden District of East Sussex in South East England. The town is on the River Uck, one of the tributaries of the River Ouse, on the southern edge of the Weald. Etymology 'Uckfield', first recorded in writing as 'Uckefeld' in 1220, is an Anglo-Saxon place name meaning 'open land of a man called Ucca'. It combines an Old English personal name, 'Ucca' with the Old English locational term, 'feld', the latter denoting open country or unencumbered ground (or, from 10th century onwards, arable land). A number of other places in the area also contain the suffix 'feld', which may be an indication of land that contrasts with the surrounding woodlands of the Weald, including in particular Ashdown Forest immediately to the north. Australian Broadcasting Corporation
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is the national broadcaster of Australia. It is principally funded by direct grants from the Australian Government and is administered by a government-appointed board. The ABC is a publicly-owned body that is politically independent and fully accountable, with its charter enshrined in legislation, the ''Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act 1983''. ABC Commercial, a profit-making division of the corporation, also helps to generate funding for content provision. The ABC was established as the Australian Broadcasting Commission on 1 July 1932 by an act of federal parliament. Crafers, South Australia
The town of Crafers is in the Adelaide Hills to the south-east of Adelaide, South Australia, considered to be an outer suburb of Adelaide. History Crafers was named after David Crafer, who arrived in Adelaide in 1838 and moved to the area. With his wife he established an inn, the Sawyers Arms, in 1839 three years after the colony of South Australia was created. He then built the Norfolk Arms on in 1840 with banquet seating for 150. He moved to Adelaide and sold the Norfolk Arms in 1842, at which point it was known as The Crafers Inn. A new hotel was built on the site in 1880, remaining into the 21st century as The Crafers Inn, but the original building was burned down in 1926. At the time the area at the foot of nearby Mount Lofty was known as the Tiers, infamous for being the haunt of numerous Tiersmen and woodcutters on the run from authorities in Adelaide.
