Ivar Huitfeldt Class Frigate
The ''Iver Huitfeldt'' class is a three-ship class of air defence frigates that entered service with the Royal Danish Navy in 2012 and 2013. Description The class is built on the experience gained from the Absalon-class support ship, ''Absalon''-class frigates, and by reusing the basic hull design of the ''Absalon'' class, the Royal Danish Navy has been able to construct the ''Iver Huitfeldt'' class considerably cheaper than comparable ships. The frigates are compatible with the Royal Danish Navy's StanFlex modular mission payload system used in the ''Absalon''s, and they are designed with slots for six modules. Vertical Launching System
A vertical launching system (VLS) is an advanced system for holding and firing missiles on mobile naval platforms, such as surface ships and submarines. Each vertical launch system consists of a number of ''cells'', which can hold one or more missiles ready for firing. Typically, each cell can hold a number of different types of missiles, allowing the ship flexibility to load the best set for any given mission. Further, when new missiles are developed, they are typically fitted to the existing vertical launch systems of that nation, allowing existing ships to use new types of missiles without expensive rework. A close-in weapon system (CIWS ) is a point-defense weapon system for detecting and destroying short-range incoming missiles and enemy aircraft which have penetrated the outer defenses, typically mounted on a naval ship.
