Ivan Rukavina
Ivan Rukavina (January 26, 1912 – April 3, 1992) was army general of the Yugoslav People's Army, People's Hero of Yugoslavia and politician. Rukavina was a member of the International Brigades and prominent Croatian and Yugoslav communist. He was a Partisan in World War II in Yugoslavia with a rank of general. After the war he was Deputy of the Minister of Defence of Yugoslavia and held various military high positions. He also supported Croatian Spring in the early 1970s and after the collapse of Yugoslavia he participated in founding of Croatian People's Party in 1990. Pre-war life Rukavina was born in Otočac in Lika region, today's Croatia in noble family. He attended gymnasium in Gračac and Otočac and finished last class in Zagreb. After the gymnasium he became a medical student at the University of Zagreb. He joined to SKOJ in 1933 after he contacted with other communist sympathizers at the university. Otočac
Otočac () is a town in Croatia, former bishopric and present Latin Catholic titular see. It lies in the northwestern part of Lika region, in the Gacka river valley. The population of the administrative area of the Town of Otočac was 9,778 in 2011, with 4,240 in Otočac itself, the majority of whom were Croats (91%). History The order was established by order of Josip Broz Tito, the supreme commander of the Yugoslav Partisans on August 15, 1943. Depending on the type of personal qualities manifested, the recipient was awarded different orders: * Order of the Partisan Star with a golden wreath - for skillful command and outstanding services. * Order of the Partisan Star with a silver wreath - for bravery and feat of a warrior. * Order of the Partisan Star with rifles - for courage and self-sacrifice. Lika
Lika () is a traditional region of Croatia proper, roughly bound by the Velebit mountain from the southwest and the Plješevica mountain from the northeast. On the north-west end Lika is bounded by Ogulin-Plaški basin, and on the south-east by the Malovan pass. The Croatian Spring ( hr, Hrvatsko proljeće), or Maspok, was a political conflict that took place from 1967 to 1971 in the Socialist Republic of Croatia, at the time part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
