Italy national bobsleigh team is the selection that represents Italy in international bobsleigh competitions. The Italian bobsleigh's body is traditionally painted with the ''rosso corsa'', the List of international auto racing colours, international auto racing colour informally assigned to Italy. History The sport of bobsleigh began to spread in Italy at the beginning of the 20th century, especially in Trentino and Veneto, where Federico Terschak introduced it in Cortina d'Ampezzo. In 1922, the first Italian bobsleigh championship was organised along the road of Falzarego Pass, while the following year Raffaele Zardini built the bobsleigh track in Ronco.. The Italian Winter Sports Federation ( it, Federazione Italiana Sport Invernali; FISI), is the winter sports federation for Italy. Part of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), it deals with all federations conducting sports for the Winter Olympics, including skiing, skating, biathlon, bobsleigh, and luge. History Founded in Turin in 1908 as L'Unione Ski Clubs Italiani (Italian Union of Ski Clubs), the organization was disbanded in 1910. Three years later, a second organization called Federazione Dello Ski (Ski Federation) was formed in Milan which lasted until 1918. In 1920, a third organization called Federazione Italiana Dello Sci (Italian Ski Federation) was formed also in Milan. International Bobsleigh And Skeleton Federation
The International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF), originally known by the French name ''Fédération Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganing'' (FIBT), is the international sports federation for bobsleigh and skeleton. It acts as an umbrella organization for 14 national bobsleigh and skeleton associations . It was founded on 23 November 1923 by the delegates of Great Britain, France, Switzerland, Canada, and the United States at the meeting of their first International Congress in Paris, France. In June 2015, it announced a name change from FIBT to IBSF. The federation's headquarters are in Lausanne, Switzerland. After the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the federation suspended the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials. The Eugenio Monti olympic track ( it, Pista olimpica Eugenio Monti ) is a bobsleigh and skeleton track located in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. It is named after Eugenio Monti (1928–2003), who won six bobsleigh medals at the Winter Olympic Games between 1956 and 1968 and ten medals at the FIBT World Championships between 1957 and 1966. It was featured in the 1981 James Bond film '' For Your Eyes Only'', held after the 1981 FIBT World Championships, before the track was shortened to its current configuration. The 1956 Winter Olympics, officially known as the VII Olympic Winter Games ( it, VII Giochi Olimpici invernali) and commonly known as Cortina d'Ampezzo 1956 ( lld, Anpezo 1956 or ), was a multi-sport event held in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, from 26 January to 5 February 1956. Cortina, which had originally been awarded the 1944 Winter Olympics, beat out Montreal, Colorado Springs and Lake Placid for the right to host the 1956 Games. The Cortina Games were unique in that many of the venues were within walking distance of each other. The organising committee received financial support from the Italian government for infrastructure improvements, but the rest of the costs for the Games had to be privately financed. Eugenio Monti
Eugenio Monti (23 January 1928 – 1 December 2003) was an Italian bobsledder and alpine skier. He is one of the most successful athletes in the history of the bobsleigh, with ten World championship medals (of which nine gold) and 6 Olympic medals including two golds. He is known also for his acts of sportsmanship during the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, which made him the first athlete ever to receive the Pierre de Coubertin medal. Biography Born in Toblach, Italy, ''The Flying Redhead'' was the best Italian young skier: he won the national titles in slalom and giant slalom, and finished third in downhill, but a 1951 accident stopped his alpine skiing career when he tore ligaments in both of his knees.
