Itagüí () is a city of Colombia, located in the south of the Aburrá Valley in the Antioquia Department. It is part of The Metropolitan Area of the Aburrá Valley. Demographics The population at the 2005 census was 230,272. Its density is 17 km2. History Founded in 1743, Itagüí was declared a municipality in 1832. Its name comes some historians of an indigenous chief named ''Bitagüí''. Two of its most representative Diego Echavarría Misas and Eladio Vélez. There were two chapels in Itagüí in colonial times. One in the place of the Tablaza that had been owned by Bruno Saldarriaga, built thanks to the permission that the Bishop of Popayán Francisco José de Figueredo granted December 19, 1743. The Medellín Metro (Spanish: ''Metro de Medellín'') is a rapid transit system that crosses the Metropolitan Area of Medellín from North to South and from Centre to West. It first opened for service on 30 November 1995. La Estrella (''English:'' "The Star"), also known as Ancón, is a station on line A of the Medellín Metro going south. It is located in the La Estrella municipality of Colombia. It was inaugurated on September 17, 2012 as part of the extension of the line from Itagüí in a ceremony attended by the current president of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos; Governor of Antioquia, Sergio Fajardo; and Medellin Mayor Aníbal Gaviria.
