"Git Along, Little Dogies" is a traditional cowboy ballad, also performed under the title "Whoopie Ti Yi Yo." It is believed to be a variation of a traditional Irish ballad about an old man rocking a cradle. The cowboy adaptation is first mentioned in the 1893 journal of Owen Wister, author of '' The Virginian''. Through Wister's influence, the melody and lyrics were first published in 1910 in John Lomax's ''Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads.'' It is cataloged as Roud Folk Song Index No. 827. Richard White (historian)
Richard White (born 1947) is an American historian, two-time winner of the Francis Parkman Prize, past President of the Organization of American Historians, and the author of books about the American West, Native American history, the United States in the Gilded Age, railroads, capitalism, and environmental history. He is the Margaret Byrne Professor of American History Emeritus at Stanford University. Earlier in his career, he taught at the University of Washington, University of Utah, and Michigan State University. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Washington. A frontier is the political and geographical area near or beyond a boundary. A frontier can also be referred to as a "front". The term came from French in the 15th century, with the meaning "borderland"—the region of a country that fronts on another country (see also marches). Frederick Jackson Turner (November 14, 1861 – March 14, 1932) was an American historian during the early 20th century, based at the University of Wisconsin until 1910, and then Harvard University. He was known primarily for his frontier thesis. He trained many PhDs who became well-known historians. He promoted interdisciplinary and quantitative methods, often with an emphasis on the Midwest. His best known publication is his essay "The Significance of the Frontier in American History," the ideas of which formed the frontier thesis. He argued that the moving western frontier exerted a strong influence on American democracy and the American character from the colonial era until 1890. The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is a museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, United States, with more than 28,000 Western and American Indian art works and artifacts.
