It's Spooky
''It's Spooky'' is a collaborative album by musicians Jad Fair (of the band Half Japanese) and Daniel Johnston. It was first released in 1989 on 50 Skidillion Watts Records, under the title ''Jad Fair and Daniel Johnston.'' Although receiving praise from critics and fans alike, the record was commercially overlooked. Both Johnston and Fair play the majority of instruments, including vocals, guitars, piano, keyboards and drums. Background Jad Fair was first made aware of Daniel Johnston in 1985 when Johnston's then-manager Jeff Tartakov gave him a copy of '' Hi, How Are You?'' while Fair was playing in Austin, Texas with Half Japanese. Three years later, in April 1988, Johnston was in New York City recording at Noise New York Studios, there he met with Fair for the first time. During these sessions, Johnston recorded two songs co-written with him and Fair, "Some Things Last a Long Time" and "Do It Right." "Do It Right" was recorded at a session between Johnston and Moe Tucker th ...

Studio Album
An album is a collection of audio recordings issued on compact disc (CD), Phonograph record, vinyl, audio tape, or another medium such as Digital distribution#Music, digital distribution. Albums of recorded sound were developed in the early 20th century as individual Phonograph record#78 rpm disc developments, 78 rpm records collected in a bound book resembling a photograph album; this format evolved after 1948 into single vinyl LP record, long-playing (LP) records played at  revolutions per minute, rpm. The album was the dominant form of recorded music expression and consumption from the mid-1960s to the early 21st century, a period known as the album era. Vinyl LPs are still issued, though album sales in the 21st-century have mostly focused on CD and MP3 formats. The 8-track tape was the first tape format widely used alongside vinyl from 1965 until being phased out by 1983 and was gradually supplanted by the cassette tape during the 1970s and early 1980s; the populari ...

Life In Exile After Abdication
''Life in Exile after Abdication'' is the second album by Moe Tucker, released in 1989. Production Rather than performing all of the instruments herself, as on her debut album, Tucker is accompanied by Lou Reed, Jad Fair, Daniel Johnston, and all four members of Sonic Youth. Critical reception Robert Christgau wrote that "'Work,' 'Spam Again,' and 'Hey Mersh!' are Amerindie knockouts, lived postpunk takes on the grind and release of lower-middle class adulthood, a subject rock and rollers usually leave to Nashville company men." ''Trouser Press'' wrote that "Tucker’s loose and unpredictable ''Life in Exile'' offers a little of everything, all performed and recorded with ramshackle casualness." The ''Chicago Reader'' called the album "a tour de force recording that wedded noisy indie guitar textures to songs of blue-collar rage, fueled by ucker'syears as a divorced mother of five trying to support her family on a Wal-Mart paycheck." ''The Washington Post'' wrote that "anyone wh ...

Double Album
A double album (or double record) is an audio album that spans two units of the primary medium in which it is sold, typically either records or compact disc. A double album is usually, though not always, released as such because the recording is longer than the capacity of the medium. Recording artists often think of double albums as being a single piece artistically; however, there are exceptions such as John Lennon's ''Some Time in New York City'' (which consisted of one studio record and one live album packaged together) and OutKast's ''Speakerboxxx/The Love Below'' (effectively two solo albums, one by each member of the duo). Since the advent of the compact disc, albums are sometimes released with a bonus disc featuring additional material as a supplement to the main album, with live tracks, studio out-takes, cut songs, or older unreleased material. One innovation was the inclusion of a DVD of related material with a compact disc, such as video related to the album or DVD-A ...

Weston State Hospital
The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, subsequently the Weston State Hospital, was a Kirkbride psychiatric hospital that was operated from 1864 until 1994 by the government of the U.S. state of West Virginia, in the city of Weston. Weston State Hospital got its name in 1913 which was used while patients occupied it, but was changed back to its originally commissioned, unused name, the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, after being reopened as a tourist attraction. Designed by Gothic Revival and Tudor Revival styles by Baltimore architect Richard Snowden Andrews, it was constructed from 1858 to 1881. Originally designed to hold 250 people, it became overcrowded in the 1950s with 2,400 patients. It was forcibly closed in 1994 due to changes in patient treatment. The hospital was bought by Joe Jordan in 2007, and is opened for tours and other events to raise money for its restoration. The hospital's main building is claimed to be one of the largest hand-cut stone masonry buildings in the U ...

Merry Christmas (Daniel Johnston Album)
''Merry Christmas'' is the tenth self-released music cassette album by singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston, recorded in 1988. The back of the cover features a typed message from Daniel: "Thanks to everyone who's helped in the past year, especially those who have bought and played my album. Thanks again." Background Merry Christmas was released three years following Johnston's last album, Continued Story. The period between Continued Story and Merry Christmas was one of increasing mental de-stability for Johnston, ultimately leading to his institutionalisation in August of 1988. In early 1986, Johnston won two awards in the Austin Chronicle, 'best songwriter' and 'best folk act.' Shortly afterwards, in the spring, Jeff Tartakov set up his publishing company. Meanwhile, Johnston had been dating Kathy McCarty, but the two had broken up by June. Stress Records also began re-releasing Johnston's material at this time. At this same time, Johnston had been spending a lot of time ...

Continued Story With Texas Instruments

It was released on CD in 1991 by Homestead Records and re-released in 2003 on a dual-album CD, along with the 1983 album ''Hi, How Are You'', by Johnston's own label, Eternal Yip Eye Music. Background In the eleven months between the recording of ''Retired Boxer'' and ''Continued Story'', Daniel Johnston had been expanding his reach with local live performances in Austin, Texas.''The Devil and Daniel Johnston, Dr. Jeff Feuerzeig, 2005'' appearing at the Woodshock 85 festival with The Texas Instruments and on the MTV program The Cutting Edge. These appearances featured Johnston performing newly written non-album material such as '''I Live My Broken Dreams''' and The Marching Guitars'''. Yip/Jump Music
''Yip/Jump Music'' is the fifth self-released music cassette album by singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston, recorded over the summer 1983. The album was re-released on cassette in 1986 by Stress records, and in 1988 released on CD and double LP by Homestead Records. The album has been re-released twice by Eternal Yip Eye Music: once in 2003 on CD and CD-R, and once in 2007 as a double vinyl LP. ''Yip/Jump Music'' is the first album to feature Johnston on the chord organ. It was recorded in his brother's garage in Texas. Background In early 1983, Johnston's family (with whom he was still living) became increasingly concerned about his mental and emotional health. His brother Dick offered to have Daniel stay with him over the summer in his home in Houston, Texas while he worked at Astroworld. Since Daniel's piano had remained in West Virginia with his parents, Johnston purchased a chord organ and converted his brother's garage into a recording studio. Along with the Chord Organ ...

The album was re-released on cassette in 1988 by Stress records, made available in downloadable mp3 format by Emusic in 2000, and in 2003 released on CD by Dual Tone, as the second half of the compilation ''Early Recordings Volume 1''. Background ''More Songs of Pain'' was Daniel Johnston's final album recorded in his parents' basement in West Virginia. During the sessions, Johnston was 21-22 and would have been studying for his Senior year at Kent State University in East Liverpool, Ohio, if he had not been taken out of education by his parents out of fear of him failing to graduate. The album is placed between '' The What of Whom'' (August 1982) and ''Yip/Jump Music'' (April 1983). The album introduces the recurring character of Joe, a stand-in for Johnston, 'an average guy trying to defeat his demons.' Joe would feature heavily in t ...

Kathy McCarty
Kathy McCarty is an Austin, Texas-based musician and painter. Career After getting her start with the band Buffalo Gals (1981–1983), McCarty was a founding member and co-leader of the band Glass Eye. After Glass Eye disbanded in 1993, she turned her attention to recording an album of covers by songwriter Daniel Johnston. ''Dead Dog's Eyeball'' was produced by former Glass Eye bandmate Brian Beattie. ''Trouser Press'' noted that "no songwriter ever had a more imaginative or beneficial interpreter than Daniel Johnston enjoys in Kathy McCarty". One of the songs of the album, ''Living Life'', was included on the soundtrack of the movie ''Before Sunrise'' (1995). ''Another Day in the Sun'' was a full-length follow-up to ''Dead Dog's Eyeball''. It was also produced by Beattie. ''Texas Monthly'' wrote: "Some songs recall Glass Eye's art-rock explosives... and McCarty's lyrical acuity remains intact... But there's an open, folkish quality too... that lends her work uncommon depth a ...

50 Skidillion Watts
50 Skidillion Watts, also known as "50,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Watts Records", was the label used by brothers David and Jad Fair of the punk rock band Half Japanese to release their first albums recorded in the late 1970s. After a deal with the British independent label Armageddon, the 50 Skidillion Watts label was not used again until the collapse of Half Japanese's Iridescent label sometime in the mid-1980s. The result of Iridescent's fall lead to 50 Skidillion Watts' revival with the help of Penn Jillette. There are claims that Penn, a passionate Half Japanese fan, used money from his appearance on ''Miami Vice'' to bring the label back in business. There is speculation that the label's short life span is due in part to a hostile distribution deal with Dutch East India Trading causing the Fair brothers to stop releasing and re-issuing albums under the label's name. Reissues of albums from 50 Skidillion Watts label have been released through Drag City (record lab ...

Glass Eye (band)
Glass Eye were an influential art rock group based in Austin, Texas, and were primarily active from 1983 to 1993. Through self-release, and being signed to Wrestler and Bar/None Records, they released four LPs, two EPs and one single, and when the band regrouped in 2006, they released their previously lost final LP, ''Every Woman's Fantasy'', on their own label, Glass Eye Records. Phil Ochs
Philip David Ochs (; December 19, 1940 – April 9, 1976) was an American songwriter and protest singer (or, as he preferred, a topical singer). Ochs was known for his sharp wit, sardonic humor, political activism, often alliterative lyrics, and distinctive voice. He wrote hundreds of songs in the 1960s and 1970s and released eight albums. Ochs performed at many political events during the 1960s counterculture era, including anti-Vietnam War and civil rights rallies, student events, and organized labor events over the course of his career, in addition to many concert appearances at such venues as New York City's Town Hall and Carnegie Hall. Politically, Ochs described himself as a "left social democrat" who became an "early revolutionary" after the protests at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago led to a police riot, which had a profound effect on his state of mind. After years of prolific writing in the 1960s, Ochs's mental stability declined in the 1970s. He ...
