It's Just Not Cricket
"It's Just Not Cricket" is the debut single of The Twelfth Man, a series of comedy productions by skilled impersonator Billy Birmingham. The single topping the charts for three weeks in June 1984, and was the second highest selling single in Australia in 1984 behind " Dancing in the Dark" by Bruce Springsteen. The piece is centered around fictitious commentary of a match between Australia and Pakistan. The track has never seen a full-length re-issue since the 2000 release of Wired World of Sports. Background and release At the time of "It’s Just Not Cricket's" release, Birmingham was running his own music marketing consultancy and helping manage fellow comedian Austen Tayshus. The Twelfth Man
The Twelfth Man (also known as The 12th Man) is the name for a series of comedy productions by Australian satirist Billy Birmingham. Birmingham, a skilled impersonator, is generally known for parodying Australian sports commentators' voices. As befits the name (a reference to the non-playing reserve in an eleven-player cricket side), Birmingham focused in particular on cricket commentators such as Richie Benaud, Bill Lawry, Ian Chappell and Tony Greig. This is also because many of Australia's cricket commentators have distinctive and easily identifiable voices and accents. The album parodies are designed as a comical look "behind the scenes" of the Nine Network's cricket commentary. Kent Music Report
The Kent Music Report was a weekly record chart of Australian music singles and albums which was compiled by music enthusiast David Kent from May 1974 through to January 1999. The chart was re-branded the Australian Music Report (AMR) in July 1987. From June 1988, the Australian Recording Industry Association, which had been using the top 50 portion of the report under licence since mid-1983, chose to produce their own listing as the ARIA Charts. Before the Kent Report, ''Go-Set'' magazine published weekly Top-40 Singles from 1966, and Album charts from 1970 until the magazine's demise in August 1974. At the ARIA Music Awards of 1988, the album won ARIA Award for Best Comedy Release. Plot A spoof episode of '' Wide World of Sports'' with Birmingham impersonating the voices of hosts Mike Gibson and Ian Chappell, and other sports commentators such as Richie Benaud, Darrell Eastlake, Jack Gibson, Max Walker, Lou Richards, Murray Walker, Ken Callander and John Tapp. Reception Richie Benaud reviewed the album saying "Plus mark, excellent entertainment as always.
