Israeli Chess Championship
The Israeli Chess Championship is a chess event held every year in Israel. History From 1951 to 1971, the men's and women's championships were held every two years, eventually becoming an annual event. The 1998 Championship was held 8–24 November in Ramat Aviv. The single-elimination tournament, 32 players in the men's section and 16 in the women's, used an unusual time control of 100 minutes for 30 moves + 30 seconds per move. GM Eran Liss won the men's final over GM Victor Mikhalevski. After tying their 2-game match with one victory apiece, they then tied an active chess playoff with one win and two draws each. In a 5-minute blitz playoff, Liss won 2–0. Irina Yudasina won the women's final over Ella Pitem with one win and one draw. Yehuda Gruenfeld ( he, יהודה גרינפלד; born 28 February 1956) is an Israeli chess player, who holds the title of grandmaster. Career He was born in Dzierżoniów, Poland. In 1974, Gruenfeld won the Israeli championship for youth players. In 1978, he tied for 2nd-5th in Skien. In 1978, he won in Gausdal. In 1979, he tied for 1st-2nd in Biel. Maria Rivka Chwoles-Lichtenfeld
Maria Rivka Chwoles-Lichtenfeld ( he, רבקה חוואלס ליכטנפלד; 10 February 1923 – 23 January 2017) was an Israeli artist and chess player who survived the Holocaust in her youth. She was two times winner of Lithuanian Women's Chess Championship (1954, 1955) and winner Israeli Women's Chess Championship in 1957. Biography She studied at the department of arts and crafts of the Vilnius Polytechnic School, simultaneously learning the basics of painting and playing the violin. After Vilnius was occupied by the Nazis on June 24, 1941, two Vilna Ghetto were established in the city on September 6, 1941; Rivka and her parents and sisters Elka (1921-1943) and Sofia ended up in the second of them. The sisters were able to escape from the ghetto, which was liquidated in mid-October 1943, and all its prisoners was murdered in Ponary massacre. Tamir Nabaty ( he, תמיר נבאתי, born 4 May 1991) is an Israeli chess Grandmaster and a two-time national chess champion (2013, 2016). Chess achievements Israeli and world championships Tamir won the Israeli Chess Championship for the first time in Acre, Israel in 2013. Tamir qualified for the Chess World Cup 2015, but lost on tiebreak in the first round to David Navara. Vitali Golod
Vitali Matveyevich Golod (; born 23 June 1971) is a Soviet-born Israeli chess player. He holds the title of Grandmaster, which FIDE awarded him in 1996. Chess career Golod was Ukrainian champion in 1991. He then moved to Israel. In 2004, he tied for 1st-2nd places with Sergey Erenburg in the Israeli championship in Ramat Aviv. He also won in Santa Monica. In 2006, he won the Spring North American FIDE Invitational tournament (GM-B section) in Schaumburg, Illinois, US, and shared third place at the Monarch Assurance Isle of Man International tournament (behind Alexander Areshchenko and Sergey Volkov). The next year Golod tied for 1st-6th with Mateusz Bartel, Zahar Efimenko, Yuri Yakovich, Michael Roiz and Mikhail Kobalia at Isle of Man, finishing second on tiebreak score. Maxim Rodshtein
Maxim Rodshtein ( he, מקסים רודשטיין, russian: Максим Эдуардович Родштейн, translit=Maksim Eduardovich Rodshtein; born 19 January 1989) is an Israeli chess grandmaster. He competed in the FIDE World Cup in 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2017. Career Rodshtein was twice silver medallist in the European Youth Chess Championships: in the Under 10 section in 1999 and the Under 14 in 2002. He won the Under 16 division of the World Youth Chess Championships in Heraklio, Greece in 2004. In 2006 he won the Israeli Chess Championship. He won the 25th Andorra International Open (30 June – 8 July 2007) in a three-way tie for first in a field of 101 players. Sergey Erenburg
Sergey Erenburg (born January 27, 1983) is an American chess player who has been a Grandmaster since 2003 and an International master since 2002. He is ranked 24th in the US, and 409th in the world. His highest rating was 2637 (in December 2012). Career Sergey Erenburg was born in Russia and immigrated to Israel when he was 15. In 2003, he took 3rd place in the World Junior championship. He won the Israeli national championship in 2004. He won 2nd place in the 2005 European Team Championship and finished in 9th place in the World Blitz Championship in 2006. Erenburg moved to the US in 2007 and earned a baccalaureate and master's degree in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Maryland Baltimore County. He earned an additional master's degree in economics at the University of Pennsylvania. Alik Gershon (born 3 June 1980, in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) is an Israeli chess grandmaster. On 21 October 2010 he set the Guinness World Record for simultaneous games after playing 523 opponents in Tel Aviv. After 18 hours and 30 minutes, he won 454 games (86%), lost 11 and drew 58. On 9 February 2011 his record was broken by Iranian chess player Ehsan Ghaem-Maghami. He was the World Under-14 champion in 1994 and World Under-16 champion in 1996. Lev Borisovich Psakhis ( he, לב בוריסוביץ' פסחיס; ; born 29 November 1958 in Tver (then Kalinin), Russia) is a naturalised Israeli chess grandmaster, trainer and author. Born in Siberia, he is also a two-time former champion of the Soviet Union. Biography He gained the International Master and International Grandmaster titles in 1980 and 1982 respectively, either side of two momentous Soviet Championship victories in 1980 (Vilnius—shared with Alexander Beliavsky) and 1981 ( Frunze—shared with Garry Kasparov, whom he defeated in round 2). Leonid Yudasin
Leonid Yudasin ( he, ליאוניד גריגורייביץ' יודסין; russian: Леонид Григорьевич Юдасин, translit=Leonid Grigoryevich Yudasin; born August 8, 1959) is a Soviet-born Israeli chess player and trainer. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 1990. Yudasin was part of the USSR team that won the gold medal in the 1990 Chess Olympiad. He competed in the Candidates Tournament for the World Chess Championship twice, in 1991 and 1994. Career Yudasin was awarded the title of International Master in 1982, and in 1984 he became the champion of Leningrad, his native city. He went on to gain the USSR Cup for rapid chess in 1988.
