Israel National Opera
Israel National Opera was Israel's principal opera company from its founding in 1947 until its closure in 1982. History The Israel National Opera was founded by the American soprano Edis de Phillipe. It staged over 1,000 performances throughout Israel by 1958. The scarcity of trained Israeli opera singers led the company to bring in international guest artists. During the early 1960s both Plácido Domingo and his wife Marta Domingo, Marta Ornelas were principal singers with the company. Lack of government funding led to the company's final closure in 1982 after several years of financial problems. In 1985, the Council for Arts and Culture created The New Israeli Opera through a partnership between the Cameri Theatre of Tel Aviv and the Israel Chamber Orchestra. José Plácido Domingo Embil (born 21 January 1941) is a Spanish opera singer, conductor, and arts administrator. He has recorded over a hundred complete operas and is well known for his versatility, regularly performing in Italian, French, German, Spanish, English and Russian in the most prestigious opera houses in the world. Although primarily a ''lirico-spinto'' tenor for most of his career, especially popular for his Cavaradossi, Hoffmann, Don José and Canio, he quickly moved into more dramatic roles, becoming the most acclaimed Otello of his generation. Marta Domingo (née Ornelas, born 1935) is a Mexican opera soprano, stage director and designer. In the 1950s and 1960s, she performed as a lyric soprano in Mexico and Israel. Since the 1990s, she has directed operas in Europe and North America. She is married to Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo, who has credited her with helping to guide his career. Israel Chamber Orchestra (abbreviation ICO, Hebrewהתזמורת הקאמרית הישראלית (''Hatizmoret hakamerit'') is an Israeli orchestra based in Tel Aviv. Primary funding comes from the Israel Ministry of Education and the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality. History Gary Bertini founded the orchestra in 1965 and was its first artistic director, for 10 years.
