Israel Cohen (Zionist)
Israel Cohen (1879 – 26 November 1961) was an Anglo-Jewish, Zionist leader, writer, and journalist, who served as secretary of the World Zionist Organization. Early life Born to Polish Jewish immigrants in Manchester, England in 1879, Israel Cohen was educated at Manchester's Jews' School (1884–1892), Manchester Grammar School (1892–1895); and then simultaneously at Jews' College and University College, London, where he received his BA. From 1895 on, Cohen became actively involved in the Zionist cause. Upon reading an article in ''The Jewish Chronicle'' about pogroms in Russia in 1891, Cohen became interested in Jewish affairs and political matters. Following a speech given by Theodor Herzl, he was further inspired to join the ranks of the Zionist movement in 1896 and became a lifelong supporter of the Zionist movement upon the establishment of the World Zionist Organization at the First Zionist Congress in Basel in August 1897. Ruhleben Internment Camp
Ruhleben internment camp was a civilian detention camp in Germany during World War I. It was located in Ruhleben, a former ''Vorwerk'' manor to the west of Berlin, now split between the districts of Spandau and Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. The camp was originally a harness racing track laid out north of the Berlin-Hamburg Railway line in 1908. Detainees The camp detainees included male citizens of the Allied Powers living, studying, working or on holiday in Germany at the outbreak of World War I. They also included the crews of several civilian ships stranded in German harbours or captured at sea. As well, there were a number of fishermen captured from trawlers which had been sunk in the North Sea in the first days of the war: they were mainly men from Hull, Grimsby and Boston. Dodd, Mead and Company was one of the pioneer publishing houses of the United States, based in New York City. Under several names, the firm operated from 1839 until 1990. History Origins In 1839, Moses Woodruff Dodd (1813–1899) and John S. Taylor, at that time a leading publisher in New York, formed the company of Taylor and Dodd as a publisher of religious books. In 1840, Dodd bought out Taylor and renamed the company as M.W. Dodd.
