Isom is a small unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Letcher County, Kentucky, Letcher County, Kentucky, United States. It is located at the junction of Kentucky Route 7, KY 7, Kentucky Route 15, KY 15 and Kentucky Route 1148, KY 1148 nine miles (14.4 km) northwest of Whitesburg, Kentucky, Whitesburg. As of the 2020 United States Census, the approximate population of the area in the Isom zip code was 769. History Isom was named for Isom Sergent, a postmaster that lived in the community. It is located between Whitesburg and Hazard. Isom was very well known in the 1950s and early 1960s for the ever-popular Stock Sale. It was the central hub on weekends for buying, trading or selling livestock, produce, and many other goods. Families out for a Sunday drive would usually go by the Stock Sale. Letcher County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2020 census, the population was 21,548. Its county seat is Whitesburg. The county, founded in 1842, is named for Robert P. Letcher, Governor of Kentucky from 1840 to 1844. History Letcher County is a dry county, with the only exceptions being the Highland Winery, the city of Whitesburg, and the city of Jenkins. Harry M. Kentucky Route 7 (KY 7) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Kentucky. Route description Kentucky Route 7 begins at a junction with KY 15 at Jeff in Perry County. The route continues through the cities of Blackey in Letcher County, Wayland in Floyd County, Salyersville in Magoffin County, West Liberty in Morgan County, Sandy Hook in Elliott County, Grayson in Carter County, and South Shore in Greenup County, where the route terminates at East First Avenue a short distance north of US 23. Kentucky Route 15 begins at a junction of US 119/Corridor F & Business KY 15 in Whitesburg, and terminates in Winchester at US 60. It is a major route, connecting the coalfields of the Cumberland Plateau with Lexington and other cities in the Bluegrass region. The segment from Whitesburg to KY 15 at Campton, which in turn connects to the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway near the town, is also the primary part of Corridor I of the Appalachian Development Highway System. Future Currently, KY 15 is being relocated onto a new four-lane divided alignment in phases. Construction on section 17 of the relocation project is from KY 205 at Vancleve to Fivemile; construction began on January 6, 2005, at a cost of $36.4 million and is 100% complete. Whitesburg is a home rule-class city in and the county seat of Letcher County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,139 at the 2010 census and an estimated 1,875 in 2018. It was named for C.
