Isniq
Isniq (Serbian: Istinić/Истинић) is a settlement north of Deçan in Western Kosovo about 45 miles (or 72 km) west of Pristina. The village is based on the plains of Dukagjini at the foot of the Accursed Mountains next to the Deçani's White Drin River and is the biggest village in Kosovo. Medicinal plants grow at the mountains of 2656 meters above the sea. Berit Backer wrote a book about the region. History In the medieval ages, the village was part of the Decani monastic estate and two families ruled it. During the Ottoman era, the village was split into three timers (military estates) led by three knights. Many inhabitants gradually embraced Islam in the 18th century. Berit Backer
Berit Backer (August 3, 1947 – March 7, 1993) was a Norwegian social anthropologist and ethnographer, head of the Institute of Peace Research (PRIO) between 1978 and 1982 in Norway. Backer was a human rights activist who fought for Albanian national causes for much of her life. She published literature on Albanian family structures from studies conducted in the village of Isniq, in the Rugova valley of Kosovo. During her first visit to Albania in 1969, she became fascinated by the Albanians, and their culture and struggle for independence. She dedicated her research for a scholarly degree in social anthropology. Berit was fluent in Albanian. She published the book “Behind Stone Walls”, a social anthropological study of traditional Albanian society. It focuses on the formation and evolution of household and family structures among the Kosovo Albanians. Deçan Municipality
Deçan Municipality or Dečani Municipality ( sq, Komuna e Deçanit; sr, Општина Дечани, ''Opština Dečani'', ) is a municipality located in the Peja District of Kosovo. The seat is the town of Deçan. According to the 2011 census, the municipality has 40,019 inhabitants, with 3,803 inhabitants in the town of Deçan. It is a mountainous area which borders Montenegro and Albania. There is a total of 37 settlements in the municipality. The municipality covers an area of . During the 1998–1999 war, Deçan was one of the strongholds of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) and subsequently suffered a large amount of infrastructure destruction by the Serbian police and paramilitary forces. Municipalities Of Kosovo
A municipality ( sq, komuna, sr, / ) is the basic administrative division in Kosovo and constitutes the only level of power in local governance. There are 38 municipalities in Kosovo; 27 of which have an Albanian ethnic majority, 10 Serb and 1 Turkish. After the 2013 Brussels Agreement, signed by the governments of Kosovo and Serbia, an agreement was made to create a Community of Serb Municipalities, which would operate within Kosovo's legal framework. Since 2013, the agreement has not been fulfilled by Kosovo's authorities, calling upon its constitution and "territorial integrity". Deçan
Deçan, or Dečani sr-cyr, Дечани ; also in use Dečane sr-cyr, Дечане is a town and municipality in Kosovo. According to the 2011 census, the town of has 3,803 inhabitants, while the municipality has 40,019 inhabitants. Geography Geographically, Deçan is located in the Accursed Mountains mountain region. It is surrounded by the Beleg Mountain. History Deçan was first recorded in 1330 in the decrees known as the Dečani chrysobulls as being a village with a population of 89 households, consisting of 623 people. The village was one of many feudal holdings of the Visoki Dečani monastery. As part of their feudal obligations, the local population of Deçan provided labour and payment in products to the Visoki Dečani monastery. Accursed Mountains
The Accursed Mountains ( sq, Bjeshkët e Nemuna; sh-Cyrl-Latn, Проклетије, Prokletije, ; both translated as "Cursed Mountains"), also known as the Albanian Alps ( sq, Alpet Shqiptare), are a mountain group in the western part of the Balkans. It is the southernmost subrange of the Dinaric Alps range (Dinarides), extending from northern Albania to southern Kosovo and northeastern Montenegro. Maja Jezercë, standing at , is the highest point of the Accursed Mountains and of all Dinaric Alps, and the fifth highest peak in Albania. White Drin
The White Drin or White Drim ( sq, Drini i Bardhë,/ ''Beli Drim'') is a river in Kosovo and northern Albania, a ca. -long headstream of the Drin. Course Kosovo The Kosovo section of the White Drin flows entirely in the semi-karst part of Kosovo, in an arc-shaped -long course. The river originates in the southern slopes of the Zhleb mountain, north of the town of Peja. The river springs near the Radavc Cave. The cave is multi-levelled, not much explored and has a lake inside. The water from the spring was used by the Peja brewery. The stream is originally a sinking river which eventually springs out from the strong well and falls down as a -high waterfall named the White Drin Waterfall near the village of Radac, away from Peja.
